MEDIA ADVISORY                                                                         November 6, 2004

MARQUETTE BACK ON TOP OF CLASS A HILL

They had to wait a year to do it, but Michigan City Marquette managed to erase some of the memories of last year’s bitter defeat to Morristown.

The Blazers were swept in three games in last year’s Class A volleyball state championship match but avenged that defeat by reversing the tables on the Yellow Jackets with a 3-0 win of their own in this year’s final.

After two consecutive state runner-up finishes, Marquette (31-7) found its way back to the top winning its fourth Class A title in six years on an impressive 25-22, 25-12, 25-20 victory in the IHSAA State Finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Juniors Michelle Fletcher and Sarah Denny did the majority of the damage for Marquette chalking up 11 kills each. Fletcher also caused problems for Morristown on serve as she managed six aces and also proved to be the Blazers’ best defensive player from a statistical standpoint with 15 digs, one block solo and three block assists. Colleen Trainor added seven kills and 11 digs and setter Kahlan Sebert dished out 35 assists.

Senior Erin Nigh led the Morristown attack with 13 kills and received help from Nicole Gentory’s eight. Defensively, Megan Stout led the Yellow Jackets with 20 digs.

The Blazers, coached by Troy Campbell, swept Cowan, 3-0 in the morning semifinals to advance to the title match for the sixth straight year. Morristown, guided to a 31-9 campaign by coach Rita Rouse, made its way into the final with a sweep of Tecumseh, 3-0, setting up the rematch.

Morristown’s Stout Named Mental Attitude Award Winner

Megan Stout from Morristown High School was named recipient of the 2004 IHSAA Class A Mental Attitude Award for volleyball, as selected by the IHSAA Executive Committee.  The recipient of the award, who was nominated by her principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in volleyball.

Athletically, she is also a member of the Yellow Jackets’ basketball and track teams.  She served as co-captain of the both squads as a sophomore and junior.

Academically, Megan ranks ninth in her senior class of 60 and is a member of the National Honor Society, where she serves as Vice-President.  She also holds offices with the Varsity Club, Student Council and Sunshine Society.  She was a Hoosier Girls State participant and was active in Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), Shelby County Youth Coalition and Morristown Christian Church Youth Group.  She is undecided as to her collegiate choice, but plans to major in Elementary Education.

Her volunteer work includes Cadet Teaching at Morristown Elementary School, volunteer activities at youth volleyball and basketball camps and involvement in the Clothe A Child Campaign.

Megan is the daughter of Diane and Rick Stout of Morristown.

Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a $1,000.00 scholarship check to Morristown High School in the name of Megan Stout.
