ANOTHER PERFECT MUNCIE BURRIS TEAM

The Muncie Burris volleyball machine continued its dominance at the IHSAA State Finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The Owls (40-0) completed a perfect campaign rolling by first time state finals participant Clinton Central, 25-19, 25-7, 25-9 to capture their eight consecutive state title in Class 2A and their 48th victory in a row. For coach Steve Shondell, this was the sixth Owls team he has guided to an undefeated season joining his squads of 1985, 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1997. Burris’ last defeat came at the hands of neighborhood rival Muncie Central on October 15, 2003.

In addition to the above-mentioned teams, Burris also won state championships in 1982, 1986, 1993 and 1994 bringing the school its 16th state title in its rich history.

Senior Brittany Fullhart led the Owls with 15 kills scoring on nearly 48 percent of her attempts and also scored four aces on serve. Sophomore Caitlyn Vann connected on 12 kills herself and senior setter Kappy Lang added 35 assists and 10 digs on the defensive side. Collectively, the Owls scored on an impressive 39 percent of their attacks for the match.

Clinton Central, coached by Jessica Barrentine, completed a 28-9 season. The Bulldogs were led by junior Aquila Orr’s six kills and senior Crystal Edmonds seven digs.

Clinton Central survived a 3-2 thriller in the semifinals against Southwood, while Burris eliminated Brownstown Central, 3-0, the same team it defeated in last year’s final.

Clinton Central’s Crystal Edmonds Named Mental Attitude Award Recipient

Co-captain of this year’s Clinton Central volleyball team, Crystal was also an outstanding sprinter on the school track team, capturing Most Valuable and Mental Attitude honors.

Academically, she ranks sixth in her class of 71.  She is a four-year Student Council member and class Treasurer and was also a member of the school choir, Foreign Language Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Pep Club.  She will attend Indiana Wesleyan, with a major in Nursing.

Her volunteer activities include work with the Salvation Army.  She was a four-year Mental Attitude winner as a member of the Bulldogs’ Winter Cheer squad and earned All-American Cheerleader accolades twice.

Crystal is the granddaughter of Brenda and Kirby Edmonds of Frankfort, Indiana.
