ANOTHER PERFECT
The Muncie
Burris volleyball machine continued its dominance at the IHSAA State Finals at
Hinkle Fieldhouse in
The Owls (40-0)
completed a perfect campaign rolling by first time state finals participant
Clinton Central, 25-19, 25-7, 25-9 to capture their eight consecutive state title in Class 2A and their 48th victory in a row.
For coach Steve Shondell,
this was the sixth Owls team he has guided to an undefeated season joining his
squads of 1985, 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1997. Burris’ last defeat came at the
hands of neighborhood rival Muncie Central on
In addition
to the above-mentioned teams, Burris also won state championships in 1982,
1986, 1993 and 1994 bringing the school its 16th state title in its
rich history.
Senior
Brittany Fullhart led the Owls with 15 kills scoring
on nearly 48 percent of her attempts and also scored four aces on serve. Sophomore
Caitlyn Vann connected on 12 kills herself and senior setter Kappy Lang added 35 assists and 10 digs on the defensive
side. Collectively, the Owls scored on an impressive 39 percent of their
attacks for the match.
Clinton
Central, coached by Jessica Barrentine, completed a
28-9 season. The Bulldogs were led by junior Aquila
Orr’s six kills and senior Crystal Edmonds seven digs.
Clinton
Central survived a 3-2 thriller in the semifinals against Southwood,
while Burris eliminated Brownstown Central, 3-0, the same team it defeated in last
year’s final.

Crystal
Edmonds of
Co-captain
of this year’s Clinton Central volleyball team, Crystal was also an outstanding
sprinter on the school track team, capturing Most Valuable and Mental Attitude
honors.
Academically,
she ranks sixth in her class of 71. She
is a four-year Student Council member and class Treasurer and was also a member
of the school choir, Foreign Language Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes
and Pep Club. She will attend Indiana
Wesleyan, with a major in Nursing.
Her
volunteer activities include work with the Salvation Army. She was a four-year Mental Attitude winner as
a member of the Bulldogs’ Winter Cheer squad and earned All-American
Cheerleader accolades twice.
