BISHOP CHATARD SWEEPS TO FIRST STATE TITLE

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard pulled away late in a tight first game and never trailed the rest of the match as the Trojans swept Boonville, 25-18, 25-19, 25-13 to win the Class 3A state championship at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

After a pair of state finals appearances in 1976 and 1977 that saw those teams stumble a step early, this group of Trojans broke through winning the school’s first championship in volleyball.

Bishop Chatard (36-4) was led by senior Emily Shroeder’s 13 kills and .455 attacking percentage while classmate Carly Mattingly contributed 31 assists as the setter to go along with eight digs. Senior Danielle Williams accounted for four of Chatard’s nine service aces in the match. The champs hitting percentage increased with each game starting at .182 in the first game, increasing to .321 in the second and topping out at .364 in the final frame. Chatard was coached by Jill Starliper.

After three previous trips to the state finals in 1980, 1984 and 1989, the 2004 Pioneers, coached by Mary Cox, broke through to the championship round before falling completing an outstanding 33-6 season. Junior Julie Breivogel topped the team with eight kills and got in on five block assists while senior Lacey Kelley dug out seven attempts.

Both teams survived five-game grudge matches in the semifinal round earlier in the day. Boonville posted a victory over South Bend St. Joseph’s in the first contest while Chatard got by 2003 state runner-up Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran in the second.
