BREBEUF JESUIT WINS SECOND TITLE IN THREE YEARS

Brebeuf Jesuit completed a stellar 37-1 campaign with a hard-fought four-game victory over Boonville (35-3) in the Class 3A championship at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.  Coach Brian Murray’s Braves recorded their second state championship in three years against a Boonville squad that reached the championship match for the second straight time.

Brebeuf rallied after dropping the first game to record a 24-26, 25-9, 25-11, 25-23 triumph.  The Braves led the opening game 24-21, but Boonville responded with five straight points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.  Boonville senior Mallory Trice served the last four points of the game, recording a service ace to give her team a 25-24 lead.

Brebeuf turned it on in dominating the second and third games, recording attack percentages of .423 in game two and .364 in game three.

Game four was tight the entire way, with sophomore middle blocker Claire McElheny providing the final point with her 12th kill of the evening.  McElheny led all players with four block assists, adding two service aces.

Senior middle blocker Kim Kristoff recorded a match-high 17 kills, adding a solo block, two block assists, and a .312 hitting percentage.  Senior setter Sam Gray had 45 assists, two service aces, and three block assists for the Braves.  Seniors Sally Fischer and Sarah Kish anchored the Brebeuf defense with a match-high 15 digs apiece.  Junior Erin Wareham led all players with six service aces.

For Boonville, senior middle hitter Julie Breivogel led the way with a team-high 12 kills and a .281 hitting percentage along with a solo block and three block assists.  Senior outside hitter Brittney Whitten recorded a double-double with 11 kills and a team-high 13 digs in addition to two solo blocks and two block assists.  Senior setter Mindy Mattingly had 28 assists.

Brebeuf reached the finals with a sweep of Bellmont (29-10) in the semifinals, while Boonville defeated South Bend St. Joseph’s (26-9) in the semifinals for the straight year, this time in three games.

BREBEUF JESUIT’S KISH HONORED WITH MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD

Brebeuf Jesuit senior libero Sarah Kish is the 2005 winner of the IHSAA Class 3A Mental Attitude Award presented by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.  Kish becomes the second Brave to receive the honor, joining Natalie Mullikin (2003).  Kish helped the 2005 Braves to their second Class 3A state championship in three years and a 37-1 record this season.

Kish is an all-around athlete who has earned nine varsity letters already—four in volleyball, three in softball, and two in basketball.  She helped Brebeuf to state championships in both volleyball and basketball in 2003-04.  After winning the school’s “Freshman of the Year” in athletics in 2002-03, Kish underwent surgery on her lower leg in the summer of 2004 for Compartment Syndrome.  Last basketball season, she fractured her tibia and fibula, forcing her to undergo surgery where a rod was placed in her lower leg (where it will remain until her competitive athletic career is over).

Kish has earned High Honor Roll status each semester at Brebeuf, compiling a 3.84 cumulative grade point average while taking advanced placement and honors classes.

“The most amazing aspect of Sarah’s attitude is the courage she demonstrated over the course of her playing career,” said Brebeuf principal Andrew F. Noga.  “She relishes working with children and serving as a mentor and role model.”

Kish, the daughter of John & Kathy Kish, will continue her academic career at Purdue next fall, majoring in engineering.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000.00 to Brebeuf Jesuit Prep School in the name of Sarah Kish.
