MARTINSVILLE WINS 4A CROWN

Martinsville completed a stellar 37-2 season with a four-game triumph over Indianapolis Cathedral (32-7) to earn its second state championship (first since 1996).  Coach Sandy Garrard’s Artesians also completed an impressive double by defeating the second-ranked Irish in the final after knocking off #1-ranked defending champion Muncie Central (34-4) in the semifinals.  Martinsville prevailed in four against Cathedral, 25-21, 10-25, 28-26, 25-21.

Martinsville trailed 11-10 in game one before senior middle blocker Jessica Breeden accounted for four straight points to give the Artesians the lead for good.  Breeden started the spurt with a kill and then served the next three points.  Cathedral never got closer than two the rest of the game.

Cathedral raced to a 10-0 lead in game two on its way to a 25-10 triumph.

Game three was tight the entire way.  Cathedral had two game points and Martinsville had one before the Artesians closed it out with three straight points, including kills by Danielle Goodnight and Mikindra Morin.  Goodnight finished with a double-double of 17 kills and 15 digs, while Morin had a match-high 48 assists and a team-high 16 digs.

The fourth game was similar, with the teams tied at 18 before Martinsville went on a 6-2 run to take a 24-20 lead.  The Artesians sealed the state title on a kill by Breeden.  Breeden led all players with 19 kills, finishing with a .341 hitting percentage.  Senior outside hitter Sara Cramer was the third Martinsville player in double digits with 13 kills and 13 digs, while senior defensive specialist Lyndy Errett had 12 digs and a solo block.

Cathedral was led by senior outside hitter Megan Bower’s 17 kills, .357 hitting percentage, and 14 digs.  Junior middle hitter Lauren McIntyre had 15 kills and four block assists, while junior opposite hitter Yvonne Marten had 12 kills and seven block assists.  Junior setter Emily Burke handed out 45 assists, junior outside hitter Emily O’Connor had 16 digs, and junior libero Julie Sylvester added 14 digs.  Senior middle hitter Carolyn Collins tied Marten for match-high honors with seven block assists.

Cathedral reached the finals with a four-game triumph over Mishawaka (35-4) in the semifinals.

MARTINSVILLE’S MORIN HONORED WITH MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD

Martinsville senior setter Mikindra Morin is the 2005 Class 4A Mental Attitude Award winner as selected by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.  Morin becomes the second winner from Martinsville, joining Gina Sichting (1994).  Recipients of this award must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability in volleyball.

In the classroom, Morin ranks 15th in her class of 345 with a 3.988 cumulative grade point average.  She is a National Honor Society student who is active as a volunteer for the Humane Society and the youth volleyball league.

“Mikindra is highly successful in a rigorous academic program and she is highly regarded by our faculty and her peers,” said Martinsville principal Don D. Alkire.  “In all areas, she exhibits a high level of character, responsibility, and maturity.

Morin is a two-sport standout for Martinsville, excelling in volleyball and tennis.  A three-time all-conference and a two-time all-Metro selection, Morin helped the Artesians to a 37-2 record and their first IHSAA championship since 1996 this season.  In tennis, she is a two-time team MVP who led the team in victories in both 2003 and 2004.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000.00 to Martinsville High School in the name of Mikindra Morin.

Morin, the daughter of Larry Morin and Sandy Garrard, plans to pursue a pre-med major in college.
