BURRIS CAPTURES 2A GIRLS VOLLEYBALL STATE TITLE

The Muncie Burris Owls (35-5) defeated the Fairfield Falcons (32-7) in three games, 25-17, 25-13, 25-17, on Saturday to capture their 10th straight 2A state championship at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The Owls were led by senior outside hitter Caitlyn Vann with a match-high 14 kills and eight digs.  Freshman outside hitter Taylor Unroe also chipped in 12 kills and seven digs.  Junior outside hitter Christie Waters led the defensive front with 10 digs and a match-high five service aces.

The Falcons were led by senior middle hitter Kelsey Herschberger with 10 kills, six digs, and one service ace.  Sophomore middle hitter Kayla Ostrander also notched six kills and eight digs.

With its 10th consecutive state championship, Burris breaks a tie for second place for the longest string of titles in IHSAA sports history. Gary Roosevelt’s boys track team and Evansville Mater Dei’s wrestling team also had won nine consecutive state championships previously. Only Carmel’s girls swimming team, which will be going for its 21st consecutive state title this winter, has more.

Head coach Steve Shondell and his Owls advanced to the state final match by defeating Brownstown Central in three games, 25-22, 25-23, 24-11, Saturday morning.  Head coach Carla Herschberger and her Falcons advanced to the state final match by defeating Heritage in five games.  It was the first state finals appearance in any team sport for Fairfield.
