CAPTURES 2A
The Muncie Burris Owls (35-5) defeated the Fairfield Falcons
(32-7) in three games, 25-17, 25-13, 25-17, on Saturday to capture their 10th
straight 2A state championship at Hinkle Fieldhouse in
The Owls were led by senior outside hitter Caitlyn Vann with a match-high 14 kills and eight digs. Freshman outside hitter Taylor Unroe also chipped in 12 kills and seven digs. Junior outside hitter Christie Waters led the defensive front with 10 digs and a match-high five service aces.
The Falcons were led by senior middle hitter Kelsey Herschberger with 10 kills, six digs, and one service ace. Sophomore middle hitter Kayla Ostrander also notched six kills and eight digs.
With its 10th consecutive state championship, Burris breaks
a tie for second place for the longest string of titles in IHSAA sports
history. Gary Roosevelt’s boys track team and Evansville Mater Dei’s wrestling
team also had won nine consecutive state championships previously. Only
Head coach Steve Shondell and his Owls advanced to the state
final match by defeating Brownstown Central in three games, 25-22, 25-23,
24-11, Saturday morning. Head coach
Carla Herschberger and her Falcons advanced to the state final match by
defeating Heritage in five games. It was
the first state finals appearance in any team sport for
KELSEY
HERSCHBERGER NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE WINNER
Kelsey Herschberger was named winner
of the 2006 Mental Attitude Award for Class 2A Volleyball by members of the
IHSAA Executive Committee.
Herschberger is Student Council
president and also a member of the Sunshine Society, Key Club, and National
Honor Society. Outside of school she is
a member of the Clinton Fame Youth Group.
Herschberger boasts a 3.92 grade
point average on a 4.0 scale. She is
also a member of the Falcons basketball team and is a two time regional
qualifier in track and field.
Herschberger is the daughter of
Carla and Kirby Herschberger.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the
IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000 to
