MARQUETTE CATHOLIC WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT CLASS A TITLE

Marquette Catholic took less than an hour to lay claim to another Class A state championship on Saturday at Ball State University’s Worthen Arena in Muncie.

 

In 59 minutes, the Blazers took three straight games from Loogootee, 25-14, 25-15, 25-13, to win the school’s fourth consecutive state title and seventh overall. It was the third straight year Marquette topped Loogootee in the championship match.

 

During their run of four consecutive state championships, the Blazers have won 27 straight tournament matches.

 

Marquette’s Ashley Edmond totaled 23 kills for the match, while Amber Cerrillos finished with nine and Brianna Gannon with eight. Cerrillos served four aces and Gannon three. Gannon also tallied 16 digs on defense for the Blazers (33-7).

 

Loogootee (28-10) was led by Lauren Baugh’s five kills. Kristan Hall and Emily Callahan each had nine digs for the Lions.

 

Marquette defeated first-time participant Lafayette Central Catholic in the day’s first semifinal match, 25-11, 22-25, 25-15, 25-23. Loogootee went the distance during its first match finally taking out Morristown, 19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-25, 15-12.

 

Marquette was coached by Troy Campbell. Loogootee’s coach was Phil Goodpaster.

 

 

CENTRAL CATHOLIC’S REBECCA GLOYESKE NAMED MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD WINNER

Lafayette Central Catholic’s Rebecca Gloyeske was named the winner of the Mental Attitude Award in Class A following the state championship match by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

 

The award is presented annually to a senior participant in the state finals who was nominated by her principal and coach and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.

 

Gloyeske is a three year varsity letter winner, and was named to the All Hoosier Heartland Conference Team as a senior.  Her last three years, she helped lead the Knights to back-to-back Hoosier Heartland Conference titles and three sectional championships, earning Honorable Mention All-State her senior year.

 

Gloyeske ranks third in her class, while accumulating a 4.08 on a 4.0 scale.  She serves as the President of Interact/Daybreak Rotary Club, is Vice President of Student Council, and is a member of the National Honor Society.  She is a nine year member of 4-H and was named as a delegate to Hoosier Girls State.  She also volunteers at the Lafayette Urban Ministry.

 

She intends to study Elementary Education at Indiana University.

 

She is the daughter of Linda and Steve Gloyeske of Lafayette.

 

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Lafayette Central Catholic High School in the name of Rebecca Gloyeske.
