MUNCIE BURRIS CAPTURES 11th STRAIGHT 2A CHAMPIONSHIP

Perennial power Muncie Burris extended its unprecedented run with its 11th straight IHSAA Class 2A championship in volleyball action at Worthen Arena.

Coach Steve Shondell’s 37-3 Owls knocked off Brownstown Central (32-6) in a rematch of the 2005 final, this time by a 25-16, 26-24, 25-23 score.  Burris has won the 2A crown each year since classes were implemented in 1997, giving them a total of 19 state championships in the 36-year history of the tournament.  With the 2007 championship, Burris has amassed an astounding 75 straight tournament victories.

Burris junior middle hitter Gerri Black recorded a match-high 11 kills and .273 hitting percentage.  Sophomore outside attacker Taylor Unroe registered 10 kills, junior setter Mia Tabberson tallied nine kills to go along with her 13 digs and 15 assists.  Senior outside hitter Christie Waters had eight kills and a game high 15 digs.  Sophomore setter Allyson Morey notched 20 assists for the Owls.

Junior outside hitter Jordyn Pendleton paced Brownstown Central with nine kills.  Senior libero Lindsey Rumph tied for match-high honors with 15 digs.  Senior middle hitter Buff Crawford recorded eight kills and freshman setter Sammie Bane recorded a match-high 27 assists.

Burris led from start to finish in game one, amassing their largest lead of the contest, 23-15, on its way to a 25-16 win.  In game two, Burris jumped out to an early 10-5 advantage and survived a pair of Brownstown Central rallies that trimmed the lead to just one at 12-11.  Burris rallied to score the next five points to post a 17-11 lead.  The Braves put together a rally of their own by notching six straight points and served for the game at leadering 24-23.  The Owls sealed game two, however, with three-straight points to close out the Braves 26-24.  In the third game, Brownstown Central jumped out to an 8-2 advantage before Burris rallied to take the lead 19-18.  With the score tied 23-23, Burris junior middle hitter Gerri Black recorded a kill on a quick set and sophomore outside hitter Taylor Unroe sealed the game three victory (25-23) with a kill.

Burris advanced to the championship match by defeating Fairfield (34-5), a re-match of the 2006 championship final, with a 3-1 victory.  Brownstown Central reached the final for sixth time and second in the last three years with a 3-0 victory over Woodlan (29-9) who made their first-ever trip to the state finals.
