A.P. BOYS BASKETBALL POLL

 

   For the most part, the leaders remained the same in the weekly A.P. boys high school basketball poll.  Pike (8-0) is still number-one in 4A.  Gary Roosevelt (8-0) continues to lead the way in 3A.  Cass (8-0) remains atop the 2A bracketing.  In Class A, White River Valley (6-1) lost its stranglehold on the premier position and was replaced by unbeaten Kouts (8-0).

MILESTONES

   Katy Hinkle has become the third player in Northwestern girls’ basketball history to score 1,000 points, joining Kim Tussinger and Marci Norris.

 

   New Palestine head basketball coach Brian Kehrt picked up his 100th career coaching win on December 13.

 

   Senior Whitney Espenlaub of New Harmony moved past Jill Reynolds into the number-one position on the Rappites’ all-time scoring list on November 30.

 

   Derek Harmon of Eastern Hancock has become the third player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

 

   NorthWood senior wrestler Brandon Garner picked up his 100th career victory during the Spartan Classic at Connersville on December 28.

 

   With 21 points in Carroll's December 28 game against Noblesville at the Crown Point Invitational, senior guard Abby Noll became the Chargers’ all-time leading scorer. Already the girl's career record holder, Noll's point total now stands at 1,198 which surpasses the 1,196 scored by Gabe Miller from 1998-2001 to make Noll the school's overall career leading scorer.

 

   Culver High School senior Stacy Stevens has passed the 1,500 point career scoring mark.

 

   Bianca Haverstock, a junior from Crawford County, reached 1,000 career points on November 30 and became the school’s all-time leading scorer.

 

   Crystal Norman became South Bend Riley’s all-time leading scorer with her 1,403rd point against Chesterton on December 14.  The previous mark of 1,402 belonged to Erin Miller (1995-99)

 

   Northwestern’s Katy Hinkle has reached 1,000 career points.

 

   Rachel Dixon of South Central set a new school single-game scoring mark with 43 points against Crothersville on December 7, breaking the old mark of 40 tallied by Becky Bruner.

 

   Stephanie Culp set the Heritage Christian career steals record with her 289th in a 90-49 win over Indianapolis Northwest on January 3.  In the same game, junior Cassie Freeman totaled a triple-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists and topped the 1,000 career point mark .

 

  On January 4 at New Castle, Kokomo seniors Ashley Hayes, with 12 points, and DeUnna Hendrix, with 16 points, both reached the 1,000-point career scoring plateaus.

 

   Teran Warner of Shenandoah reached the 500-rebound mark during the Indiana Hall of Fame Classic on December 27.

 

   Harrison (West Lafaytte) senior Brittany Dildine scored the 1000th point of her career in a game against Gary West on January 3.

 

   Liz Honegger of Lafayette Jefferson reached the 1,000 point scoring mark for her career in the Bronchos’ game against Gary West Side on January 2.

 

   Washington Township senior Christi Gladdis became the Senators’ all-time leading scorer on December 28 against LaCrosse, breaking the previous record of 787 points held by 1981 graduate Chris Rudman.

 

   Senior Andrew Hershberger topped the 1,000-point career mark for Goshen in the Redskins’ game against Northridge on January 3, becoming the 6th in school history to reach that goal, the first in 11 years.

 

   A.J. Graves became the 5th player in White River Valley history to reach 1,000 career points.  Other Wolverines to reach that goal include his brothers, Matthew and Andrew, along with Marc Hostetter and Troy Halt.

 

 

IHSAA OVERTIME

   Matt Wilhoit has stepped down as head girls’ soccer coach at Bloomington South.

 

   Former head basketball coach and athletic director at Rossville, Larry Good passed away December 15.

 

   Bill Doba, the former head coach at Goshen, Angola and Mishawaka, has taken over as the new head football coach at Washington State.

 

   Former North Central (Indpls.) basketball player Kurnie Nickson was presented the Bryce William Mitchell Memorial Fund Award on December 20.  It was the first presentation of the award, named for the son of Panthers’ head coach Doug Mitchell.

 

   Kevin Frye has resigned as head football coach at Elwood after seven seasons.

 

   Muncie Central volleyball coach Dave Shondell has been named national volleyball coach of the year by Student Sports Magazine.  This year, his team finished 39-1 and was 4A state champ.  His 13-year record with the Bearcats is 428-52.

 

   Six women will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in ceremonies scheduled for April 25, 2003.  They include:  Linda Barnett, Clinton Central; Donna Cheatham, Southwestern (Hanover); Margaret Kelley, Ladywood-St. Agnes Academy; Carmella Dunn, East Chicago Roosevelt; Cecilia Mimms, Indianapolis Cathedral; and Teri Rosinski, Norwell.
