TWO WEEKENDS REMAINING IN WRESTLING SEASON

Eight-time defending state champion Evansville Mater Dei continued its stranglehold on the top spot in the Jan. 9 poll of the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association. At the same time, the Wildcats and the rest of the state begin the countdown to the end of the regular season and gear up for the post-season state tournament series.

The pairings for the eight-team state finals of the Eighth Annual IHSAA Team Wrestling Tournament Series will be drawn on Thursday, January 23 at the IHSAA office. The draw will begin at 8 a.m. EST and will be posted to the IHSAA website on the Wrestling page shortly thereafter.

Some new wrinkles to the tournament this year include:

  • Condensing sectional sites from 64 to 32
  • Wrestlebacks at the sectional level only to determine third through sixth places in each weight class
  • The top two scoring teams at the sectional will advance to the team regional
  • The individual state finals will contain a “placement” round during Saturday’s semifinal round to determine medal match opponents in the evening session.

The entire tournament format is listed in the 2002-03 Winter Bulletin on page 170 for individuals and page 180 for the team portion.

Seeds for the sectional round will be determined at the sectional seeding meetings to be conducted Monday, Jan. 27 at the host school of each sectional.

Regular season games are still several weeks away for spring sports but the practice season begins February 24 for softball with baseball getting underway one week later on March 3. With those dates in mind, the IHSAA announces the scrimmage rules and regulations for each sport. No changes were made to the format of the scrimmage in either sport from last year.

MILESTONES

Darnell Archey, a New Castle High School graduate and current Butler University basketball player, is in the midst of setting the NCAA Division I record for consecutive free throws made with 82 straight. Archey connected on all three attempts against Illinois-Chicago on Jan. 4 giving him 76 in a row breaking the previous mark of 73 by Villanova’s Gary Buchanan. He added to his string with six more against Detroit on Jan. 11. Archey will try to extend his record in Butler’s next game at Wright State on Thursday.

Trey Eaton broke the Tippecanoe Valley career scoring record in boys basketball with 32 points against Northfield on Jan. 11. Eaton, currently the state’s leading scorer at 27.2 points per game, now has 1,369 points for his varsity career. The old record was 1,352 set in 1992 by Scott Johnson.

Teammates Suntana Granderson and Crystal Norman both scored their 1,500th point in their South Bend Riley girls basketball careers last week. Norman hit her milestone on Jan. 7 versus NorthWood, while Granderson reached the mark in the team’s Jan. 10 game against South Bend Adams.

DeUnna Hendrix of Kokomo became the 23rd girls basketball player in Howard County history and sixth in her school’s history to reach the 1,000-point plateau in the Wildkats’ victory over New Castle on Jan. 4.

Anderson’s Kenya Jones scored 30 points in the Indians’ victory over Greenfield-Central on Jan. 9 and joined the 1,000 point club at her school. Jones has scored 1,028 to date in four varsity seasons.

Northridge boys swimming coach Joe Keller posted his 100th career victory in the Raiders dual with Wawasee on Jan. 7. It was the 30th consecutive conference victory for Northridge.

Columbus North’s Evan Kleinhenz, a 171-pounder, set the school record for career wrestling victories on Jan. 9 celebrating his 113th win during the Bull Dogs’ match at Seymour. Kevin Meyer with 112 held the previous school mark.

Scoring 25 points in his team’s Jan. 7 win over Carroll (Flora), Western’s Josh Nelson surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his career. Nelson becomes just the second player in Panthers history to reach that level joining Rick Pearson who scored 1,053 from 1972-76.

Geoff Van Winkle, a 6-5 senior guard from Forest Park and committed to the University of Southern Indiana, tied the state record for most consecutive free throws made with 72 straight before missing in the Rangers’ game against Washington Catholic on Dec. 28. The streak began last Jan. 12 against Perry Central. His mark also ranks fourth best all-time nationally among high school players and tied, coincidentally, another Indiana player, Rob Cavanaugh of Valparaiso, who hit 72 in a row from Dec. 15, 1989 to Jan. 27, 1990. The national high school record is 126 consecutive free throws made by Daryl Moreau of New Orleans DeLaSalle, LA over the 1978 and 1979 seasons.

IHSAA OVERTIME

Holly Decker has been named girls tennis coach at Bloomington South.

Amanda McCormick of Class 2A volleyball state champion Muncie Burris has been selected as the 2002-03 Gatorade Indiana High School Volleyball Player of the Year. McCormick, also the mental attitude award winner at this year’s state finals, now qualifies for consideration for the National High School Volleyball Player of the Year award that will be named on Jan. 28.

Hank Stram and Bob Kuechenberg, both Northwest Indiana natives, were named two of 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Jan. 6. Stram, who starred on the gridiron at Gary Wallace and Purdue and spent 17 seasons in the NFL, coached the Kansas City Chiefs to two Super Bowl appearances and remains the franchise’s winningest coach. Kuechenberg, an all-state lineman at Hobart who went on to Notre Dame, also played 14 years with the Miami Dolphins and played on the 1973 and 1974 Super Bowl championship teams. The Hall of Fame’s 39-member Board of Selectors will meet Jan. 25 to elect this year’s class.

Joe Potesta has been named boys soccer coach at Warren Central. Potesta coached the past four seasons at Ben Davis. Gary Roberts, who previously coached both Warren Central boys and girls teams, will continue to coach the girls team.
