STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT BEGINS SATURDAY

   Competition in the 65th Annual Individual and 7th Annual Team IHSAA Wrestling Tournaments will get underway on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at 32 sectional sites.  Weigh-in is scheduled for 7:00 – 8:00 a.m, with continuous sessions beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the finals at approximately 4:00 p.m.

 

   Seeds for the Individual Tournament sectional round were determined at coaches meetings conducted Monday at the host school of each sectional.   Regional action at 16 locations is slated for Saturday, February 8, with the four semi-states on Saturday, February 15.   The state finals will be held at Conseco Fieldhouse on Friday, February 21, and Saturday, February 22.

 

   The team regionals are scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, with semi-state matchups on Wednesday, February 12, and the state finals on Saturday, March 1, at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

WRESTLING MEDIA CREDENTIALS

   The 2002-03 IHSAA State Finals Media Credential will serve as admission to the individual and team state finals competition at Conseco Fieldhouse and Center Grove High School.  If you have not applied for such credential, please forward your request, on company letterhead, to Jerry Baker, Sports Information Director, IHSAA, 9150 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46260.

 

   For all other rounds of the tournament, you must contact the host school to acquire the proper credentials.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL TOURNEY DRAW SET FOR MONDAY

   The draw to set the field for the 28th Annual Girls Basketball Tournament Series will be conducted at the IHSAA headquarters on Monday, February 3, 2003, at 12:00 Noon.  The pairings will be released immediately upon completion and will be available on the IHSAA web site under Girls Basketball.

 

   The sectional round of the tourney will be held on February 11, 14 and 15 at 64 sites in four classes.  Regional play is penciled in for February 22, with the semi-states on March 1 and the state finals at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on March 8.

 

ICGSA GIRLS BASKETBALL POLL

   For the week ending January 25, 2003, the number-one teams remained the same in all four girls basketball classifications.  The runner-up slot also remained the same in all but class A, where New Harmony made the leap from fourth to second as they picked up their fifth straight win to run their record to 17-3.  Tri-Central dropped to third.

A.P. BOYS BASKETBALL POLL

   There were a couple of changes among the leaders in the weekly Association Press Poll of boys high school basketball for the week ending January 25, 2003.  Pike (14-0) continues with its stranglehold on the top spot in 4A.  Gary Roosevelt (13-1) reversed its tumble from the number-one position and has regained the lead in AAA, with Indianapolis Chatard (9-1) falling from first to third.  Cass (12-0) maintains the premier position in AA again this week.  In Class A, Orleans (14-0) jumps up two notches from third to first, with Kouts (13-1) dropping to third.

TREY EATON AND KATIE GEARLDS BASKETBALL SCORING LEADERS

   In the weekly compilation of state scoring leaders, Tippecanoe Valley’s Trey Eaton and Beech Grove’s Katie Gearlds hold down the top spots.  Senior Eaton moved into the leadership position for the first time this season with a 29.5 average over 13 games.  Senior Gearlds, who has now passed the 2,000 point career mark, is the girls leader with an average of 29.1 over 19 games.

 

   Senior David Allen of Borden is the state’s top rebounder with a 13.1 average over 12 games for the boys.  Amy Dunbar of Oregon-Davis, also a senior, leads the rebounding column for the girls with a 17 game average of 20.0.

IHSSCA SWIMMING POLLS

   The Carmel Greyhounds continue to dominate both sides of the most recent Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association polls.  The defending state champs have held down the top spot since pre-season.

 

   Looking ahead, the 29th Annual Girls Tournament Series will begin with sectional competition on Thursday, February 6, and Saturday, February 8.  The diving regionals will be held on Tuesday, February 11.  The state champion will be crowned following competition on Friday, February 14, and Saturday, February 15, at the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI, 901 West New York Street, Indianapolis.

 

   The 66th Annual Boys Tournament Series will get underway on Thursday, February 21, and conclude on Friday, February 28, and Saturday, March 1.

CHESTERTON NO. 1 IN GYMNASTICS

   The latest Indiana High School Gymnastics Coaches Poll continues to showcase defending state champ Chesterton in the top spot.  Fort Wayne Dwenger, the 2002 runner-up, is running second to the Trojans in the latest poll, with Valparaiso, New Castle, 8th in the title chase a year ago, and Center Grove rounding out the top-five.

MILESTONES

   Drew Sease of Zionsville set two school records during the Pike swim meet, breaking the Eagles’ marks in the 200 IM and 100 Fly.  The previous marks had been set in 1992 and 1987 respectively.

 

   Amanda Norris of Shenandoah became the school’s all-time leading scorer on January 24 in a game against Knightstown.  2001 graduate Kelly Troxell was the previous record-holder with 1,225 career points.

 

   Fort Wayne Canterbury’s Lindsey Swanson passed the 1,500-point career mark on January 21 versus Central Noble.

 

   Janese Banks of Ben Davis scored her 1000th career point on January 15 in a game against Decatur Central.

 

   Lindsay Benko of Elkhart, Ind., swimming for the United States, set a world record Sunday in the 400-meter freestyle at the short course World Cup in Berlin.  Benko was timed in three minutes, 59.53 seconds, easily breaking the mark of 4:00.03 set by Costa Rica's Claudia Poll in 1997.

 

   For the first time in school history, New Castle has 4 players with over 500 points in their career.   They include Megan Spurlock (783), Lyndsay Padgett (668), Lindsey Miller (600), and Brittanie Thompson (530).

 

IHSAA OVERTIME

 

   The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame has announced that Patricia “Pat” Roy will be honored at this year’s women’s banquet as the recipient of the St. Vincent Silver Medal Award.  A former assistant commissioner with the IHSAA, Pat will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on April 25, 2003.  The Hall also announced that James Cox of Marion and Rosalie Leedy of Lebanon of recipients of the Center Circle Officials Recognition Award.

 

   Phil Watkins of Bloomington South has been named recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award presented by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.  He will receive the award at a banquet in Indianapolis February 22.  Others to be honored include Larry Burns of Delta, Carl Gioia and Ben Potts of Valparaiso, Evan Kleinhenz of Columbus North, Cody Porter of North Vermillion, Trent Rogers of Clinton Prairie, Joey Smith of Mooresville, Chris West of Speedway and Matt Zore of Indianapolis Cathedral.
