BOB LOVELL SELECTED DISTRICT II MEDIA SERVICE AWARD WINNER

Known throughout the state for his love and knowledge of Indiana high school sports, veteran radio broadcaster Bob Lovell has been selected as the 2002-03 recipient of the IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award for District II.

Bob Lovell was instrumental in the creation of Indiana Sports Talk and has hosted the show for most of its nine year existence.  Beginning with eight stations, Indiana Sports Talk has grown to nearly 50 outlets around the state, truly uniting high school and college sports fans on Friday and Saturday evenings.  As the host of Indiana Sports Talk, Lovell has been honored as 1999 Indiana Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Sportscaster of the Year, 2001 IBCA District IV Virgil Sweet Service Award, and 2002 IFCA News Media Award.

Prior to creating Indiana Sports Talk, Lovell completed a successful coaching career in the collegiate ranks.  He directed his Franklin College squads to two appearances in the NAIA-National Tournament, including a spot in the Final Sixteen in 1980.  Lovell’s record of 75-29 (.721) still stands as the highest winning percentage in school history.

In 1982, Lovell moved across town to IUPUI, serving as the Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach and directing two of his squads to NAIA-National Tournament appearances, including advancement to the Final Sixteen in 1990.  Inducted into the IUPUI Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996, Lovell still holds the school record for most career wins with 195.

In addition to hosting Indiana Sports Talk, Lovell serves as an Associate Commissioner of the Horizon League and the Director of Basketball Operations.  He supervises all activities related to the conference’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, including scheduling, officiating, television packages and the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships.

A graduate of Plainfield High School, Lovell is a Cum Laude graduate of Franklin College, and holds a Master of Science Degree from Butler University.  Lovell and his wife, Penny, reside in Franklin and have a daughter, Stephanie Wheeler, son-in-law Kurt Wheeler, and grandson Jackson Lovell Wheeler.

Bob Lovell will be honored on Friday, February 21, 2003 during a special ceremony prior to the tip-off of the Plainfield-Franklin boys’ basketball game at Plainfield High School.

On behalf of all 392 member schools of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, we salute Bob Lovell and thank him for his dedicated service to high school athletics in our state by presenting him with the District II 2002-2003 Distinguished Media Service Award.
