IHSAA GIRLS GYMNASTICS FINALS NEXT UP

The 31st Annual 2003 Girls Gymnastics Tournament Series State Championship will be decided this Saturday afternoon, March 22, at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis.

Chesterton is one of eight complete teams to return to state finals action as they go for their fourth title, having won in 1993, 2000 and 2002, all under head coach Maria Bachuchin.  The Trojans had to settle for the runner-up spot in the Valparaiso Regional, as the host Vikings ran up the highest point total of any of the regional qualifiers, 111.750, with winners on the Vault, Bars, Balance Beam and All-Around.

Other former state championship schools which have earned the right to return to the 2003 finals in team competition include Valparaiso (1981-91-94-97-98), Columbus East (1990) and Fort Wayne Dwenger (1995).

Returning individual champions this year include: Lauren West of Chesterton, last year’s Bars, Balance Beam and All-Around winner; Jenna Tarkington of Northwestern, last year’s champ in the Floor Exercise; and Niccole Van Hoey, the 2002 champion on the Vault.

The competition order in each of the events is available on the IHSAA web site at IHSAA Girls Gymnastics.

The team and individual winners at each of the regional sites can be found at 2003 Gymnastics Regional Winners.  Previous team state champs are listed at IHSAA Gymanstics Team State Champions.  Individual titlists may be viewed at IHSAA Gymnastics Individual State Champions.
