School became IHSAA member in 1963…school has won 6 state titles (football 1983 (2A), 1984 (2A), 1997 (3A), 1998 (3A), 2001 (3A), 2002 (3A))…seven members of current team were on the school’s football roster which won the 3A title in November…school has had 2 mental attitude award winners:  Mike Hackman, football (2A), 1983;  Michael Dury, football (3A), 2002

Rating Pre-Season/Final:    #2 / #1… Last Year: Lost to Taylor (46-44) in Taylor Sectional…History: 5 sectionals (1978-81-97-01-03),  1 regional (2003)…1 semi-state (2003)…held 10 teams to 30 or fewer points in 2002-03…Basil Mawbey coached Connersville to 1983 state championship (63-62 Anderson  record: 26-2)…Mawbey attempting to become first coach to win a title in both the single and multiple class systems…also, trying to become sixth coach to win state championships at different schools (Bill Green, Marion Crawley, Glenn Curtis, Burl Friddle, Cliff Wells)…inducted into Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002…wife, Eileen, is a culinary artist…pre-season ranked #2 behind Speedway, the defending Class AA champion… School became IHSAA member in 1963.

Rating Pre-Season/Final:  #8 / #8…Last Year: Lost to Crawford County (71-65) in Southridge Sectional…History: 3 sectionals (1990-93-2003),  1 regional (2002-03)…1 semi-state (2003)…lost 4 games by total of 16 points during 2002-03 season…lost 2 of last 4 regular season games…only team in final-eight whose scoring average increased during tourney play from regular season (63.7 – 66.1)… Tom Beach is a licensed official…School became IHSAA member in 1971…school has won 1 state title (softball (A) 2001)…school has had 2 mental attitude award winners:  Kate Miller, softball (A), 2001;  Lisa Hopenjans, basketball (2A), 2000

Rating Pre-Season/Final:  unranked / #7…Last Year: Lost to Morristown (43-36) in Southwestern (Shelbyville) Sectional…History: 2 sectionals (1999-2003), 1 Regional (2003), 1 Semi-State (2003)…scored 90+ points 3 times (102 vs. Morton Memorial, 95 at Oldenburg Academy, 93 vs. Edinburgh)..1-1 in overtime games (lost at Brown County (62-60), won vs. Bloomfield (49-45) in Regional)… School became IHSAA member in 1958 as consolidation of Flat Rock, Mt. Auburn…school has had 1 mental attitude award winner:  Jeremy Wright, track & field, 1992.

BISHOP DWENGER CAPTURES GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIP

The 31st Annual 2003 Girls Gymnastics Tournament Series State Championship was decided Saturday afternoon, March 22, at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis, with Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger picking up its second title, outpointing three-time state champ Chesterton, 111.425 – 110.950.  The Saints had captured the 1995 championship, also under head coach Rose Nix, again winning out over Chesterton, 109.6 – 109.45.  For Chesterton, it was their third runner-up finish at Perry Meridian in the finals.

LAUREN WEST OF CHESTERTON WINS MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD

Lauren West of Chesterton captured the 2003 Mildred M. Ball Mental Attitude Award in Gymnastics.  At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee presents the award to the outstanding senior participant in the Gymnastics State Finals.  The recipient of the award, who was nominated by her principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in gymnastics.

 

During her career, Lauren has captured four individual state championships and two team state titles.  This year, she led her team to a second place finish in the state competition by finishing third in Vaulting, a tie for fifth on the Uneven Bars, seventeenth on the Balance Beam, second in the Floor Exercise and third in the All-Around.

 

BASEBALL READY TO “PLAY BALL”

The first pitch of the 2003 IHSAA baseball season will the on the way next Monday, March 31 as teams throughout the state take to the diamonds.

 

The Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association has released its pre-season poll which shows McCutcheon in the top spot in 4A.  The Mavericks lost in the sectional round of last year’s tourney, 6-5 in 9 innings to Kokomo at Lafayette Jefferson.  Vincennes Lincoln is number-one in 3A.  The Alices shut out Bellmont 4-0 last season to claim the championship.  In Class 2A, Taylor shows the way.  The Titans were 6-5 losers to Manchester in the 2002 state semi-finals.  Fort Wayne Blackhawk tops the Class A list.  The Braves grabbed their first baseball crown a year ago, defeating Tecumseh 7-3 at Victory Field.
