GIRLS SOFTBALL TOURNEY BEGINS NEXT MONDAY

Sectional play in the 19th Annual Girls Softball Tournament Series, with 352 schools competing, will begin Monday, May 26, and run through Saturday, May 31, at 48 sites throughout the state.  Regional play is slated for Saturday, June 7, with the State Finals on Friday and Saturday, June 13-14.

Clinton Prairie, the defending state champ in Class A, will open up play in the Tri-Central Sectional against Wes-Del.  Evansville Memorial is the defending title-holder in Class 2A and will host its own sectional with Mount Vernon as its first round opponent.  In Class 3A, Lake Central will open up defense of its championship banner in the Highland Sectional against Munster.

The complete tournament pairings are available at 2003 Girls Softball Tourney Pairings.

Shenandoah is the state’s all-time leader in total sectional titles with 14, including the 2001-02 season.  Boonville, Center Grove and Eastern (Greentown) are next in line with 13.  You can check out a complete list of the all-time leaders on the IHSAA website at IHSAA Softball Sectional Leaders.

The top Class 3A team in this week’s ICGSA poll, McCutcheon, has taken home seven sectional titles, the last of which came during the 1996-97 season.  Andrean, number-one in the weekly Class 2A poll, has captured a pair of sectional crowns in 1997-98 and 1998-99.  Indianapolis Lutheran, tops in Class A, has six sectional championship trophies, the latest of which was added in 2001-02.
