GIRLS SOFTBALL TOURNEY BEGINS NEXT MONDAY

Sectional play in the 19th Annual Girls Softball Tournament Series, with 352 schools competing, will begin Monday, May 26, and run through Saturday, May 31, at 48 sites throughout the state.  Regional play is slated for Saturday, June 7, with the State Finals on Friday and Saturday, June 13-14.

 

Clinton Prairie, the defending state champ in Class A, will open up play in the Tri-Central Sectional against Wes-Del.  Evansville Memorial is the defending title-holder in Class 2A and will host its own sectional with Mount Vernon as its first round opponent.  In Class 3A, Lake Central will open up defense of its championship banner in the Highland Sectional against Munster.

Shenandoah is the state’s all-time leader in total sectional titles with 14, including the 2001-02 season.  Boonville, Center Grove and Eastern (Greentown) are next in line with 13.  You can check out a complete list of the all-time leaders on the IHSAA website at IHSAA Softball Sectional Leaders.

 

The top Class 3A team in this week’s ICGSA poll, McCutcheon, has taken home seven sectional titles, the last of which came during the 1996-97 season.  Andrean, number-one in the weekly Class 2A poll, has captured a pair of sectional crowns in 1997-98 and 1998-99.  Indianapolis Lutheran, tops in Class A, has six sectional championship trophies, the latest of which was added in 2001-02.

The tournament will move to the regional round on Tuesday, May 27, with the finals on Saturday, June 7.

 

Fort Wayne Northrop, under head coach Tom Knudson, captured its third consecutive state title in 2002.  It was the fifth title overall for the Bruins, including wins in 1981 and 1991.

GIRLS TENNIS TITLE CHASE BEGINS THURSDAY

The 29th Annual Girls Team Tennis Tournament Series will take to the courts throughout the state this Thursday, May 22, with competition at 64 sectional locations.  Regional play is on tap for Tuesday and Wednesday, May 27-28, with the semi-state lineup set for Saturday, May 31.  The state finals will again be held at North Central (Indpls.) High School on Saturday, June 7, 2003.

 

North Central (Indpls.) claimed its 11th state championship last year, defeating Jasper 4-1.

 

The 22nd Annual Girls Tennis Singles Tournament Series and the 13th Annual Girls Tennis Doubles Tournament Series will have their sectionals played concurrently at team tennis regional sites beginning on May 27, with their regionals on Saturday, June 7, and the state finals on Friday and Saturday, June 13-14, at North Central (Indpls.) High School.

 

Ashlee Davis of Anderson Highland completed an undefeated season and captured the 2002 title in the IHSAA Girls Singles Tournament Series. 

 

The North Central (Indpls.) doubles tandem of senior Karin Agness and junior Ena Jakupovic, part of the Panthers’ team that won the team state title a week earlier, finished a perfect season (29-0) by capturing the 2002  Girls Doubles Tennis Tournament Series.

BASEBALL TOURNAMENT DRAW SET FOR THURSDAY

Pairings for the 37th Annual Boys Baseball Tournament Series will be conducted Thursday, May 22, 2003, at the IHSAA offices in Indianapolis.  The results will be posted on the IHSAA website under Boys Baseball – 2003 Tournament Pairings at approximately 1:00 p.m.

 

Sectional action in this year’s championship will begin on Monday, June 2, at 64 sites across Indiana, with regional play slated for Saturday, June 14, and the state finals on Friday and Saturday, June 20-21.

 

The defending state champions include:  Class A, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian; Class 2A, Manchester;  Class 3A, Vincennes Lincoln; Class 4A, Munster.

MILESTONES

Larry Stemmler, girls head track coach at New Haven, has picked up his 116th career victory on May 9, making him the all-time career wins leader for the Bulldogs.  The former leader was Tom Guthrie, who had 114 career wins.

 

 

IHSAA OVERTIME

Brent Keck, the girls head basketball coach at Frankton, will leave that position to assume the boys head basketball coaching job with the Eagles.  He replaced Rex Bauchert, who earlier announced his retirement.

 

After five seasons, Mike Cochran has resigned as head football coach at DeKalb to become an assistant coach at Gulf Coast High School in Naples, Florida.

 

Stacy Brewer has been named girls head basketball coach at Anderson Highland.  She is a 1995 graduate of the school and replaces Bob Windlan, who resigned after last season.

 

Mark Horvath is the new boys head basketball coach at Andrean.  He has been a freshman and JV coach with the Fighting 59ers since 1984 and will continue as cross country head coach.  He replaces Pete Trgovich who stepped down in March.

 

Denise Rossa has tendered her resignation as volleyball coach at Highland, a position she had held for the past six years.

 

Kurt Ogden has resigned as Head Girls' Basketball Coach at Tipton. During his six-years he led the lady devils to 85-44 record.

 

Westfield has hired Joe Pearson, an assistant at Pike for six seasons, as its new boys head basketball coach.  He replaces Tod Ulrey, who had finished out the season with the Shamrocks following the resignation of Joe Bennett near the end of the season.  Westfield has also signed on Nick Magdalinos as its new girls head soccer coach.

 

 Crawfordsville head football coach Derry Zachery will not return next season.  He had been with the Athenians for five years.

 

Ken Jankowski has been hired as the new girls basketball coach at Mishawaka.  He replaces 14-year cavemen coach Mike Breske, who resigned in March.

 

Following five seasons as girls head basketball coach, Kyle Elliott has resigned his position at Culver Community.

 

Sheila Hobbs, varsity assistant for the past six years, has been hired as the new girls head basketball coach at Richmond, replacing Ron Reeves, who resigned in March.

 

Centerville has hired Ryan Chiddister as its new boys head basketball coach.  He had been an assistant for former head coach Rick Schauss, who resigned in March to become the junior high principal at Centerville.

 

After one season, Brad Acton has resigned as girls head basketball coach at Benton Central to become guidance counselor and girls head basketball coach at Tri-West.
