Fort Wayne Northrop, the defending girls state champ, rolled to a 178-65.5 margin over second-place Homestead in the Northrop sectional.  Lawrence North, defending titlist in boys competition, raced to a 162-123 margin over second place North Central (Indpls.) in the North Central Sectional

Jeffersonville is the all-time leader in girls’ regional crowns with 13, the latest in 1998-99.  North Central (Indpls.) is next in line with 12 titles, the last of which the Panthers earned in 1990-91.

For the boys, Gary Roosevelt is the run-away leader in regionals won with 29, their most recent in 1989-90.  North Central (Indpls.) follows with 20, then Jeffersonville with 14.

REGIONAL & SEMI-STATE COMPETITION IN GIRLS TENNIS TOURNEY

Regional play in The 29th Annual Girls Team Tennis Tournament Series is on the schedule for Tonight and Tomorrow, May 27-28, with the semi-state lineup set for Saturday, May 31.  The state finals will again be held at North Central (Indpls.) High School on Saturday, June 7, 2003.

 

Last year’s team state champion, North Central (Indpls.), is still in contention for its 12th trophy after rolling past Heritage Christian, 5-0, and Indianapolis Cathedral, 5-0,  in sectional action last week.  The state’s second-ranked Panther squad advances to the regional round on its home courts to face Mount Vernon (Fortville).  Carmel, number-one in the final IHSTeCA poll, also remains alive following the Greyhounds’ victories over Noblesville and Hamilton Southeastern by identical 5-0 scores and will square off against Lawrence North in the North Central (Indpls.) regional.

The 22nd Annual Girls Tennis Singles Tournament Series and the 13th Annual Girls Tennis Doubles Tournament Series will have their sectionals played concurrently at team tennis regional sites beginning this evening, with regional action on Saturday, June 7, and the state finals on Friday and Saturday, June 13-14, at North Central (Indpls.) High School.

GIRLS SOFTBALL TOURNEY UNDERWAY

Sectional play in the 19th Annual Girls Softball Tournament Series, began yesterday and will run through Saturday, May 31, at 48 sites throughout the state.  Regional play goes Saturday, June 7, with the State Finals on Friday and Saturday, June 13-14.

 

Clinton Prairie, the defending state champ in Class A, opened up play in the Tri-Central Sectional with a 12-0 victory against Wes-Del and will meet Frankton.  Evansville Memorial is the defending title-holder in Class 2A and will host its own sectional with Mount Vernon as its first round opponent.  In Class 3A, Lake Central began defense of its championship banner in the Highland Sectional with a 2-0 shutout of Munster and has Hammond up next.

Shenandoah is the state’s all-time leader in total sectional titles with 14, including the 2001-02 season.  Boonville, Center Grove and Eastern (Greentown) are next in line with 13.  You can check out a complete list of the all-time leaders on the IHSAA website at IHSAA Softball Sectional Leaders.

 

The top Class 3A team in the final ICGSA poll, McCutcheon, has taken home seven sectional titles, the last of which came during the 1996-97 season.  Andrean, number-one in the weekly Class 2A poll, has captured a pair of sectional crowns in 1997-98 and 1998-99.  Indianapolis Lutheran, tops in Class A, has six sectional championship trophies, the latest of which was added in 2001-02.

FIRST PITCH IN BASEBALL TOURNAMENT MONDAY

The 37th Annual Boys Baseball Tournament Series will begin on Monday, June 2, at 64 sites across Indiana, with regional play slated for Saturday, June 14, and the state finals on Friday and Saturday, June 20-21.

 

Class A defending state champion, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, will open up against Lakewood Park Christian at Bethany Christian.  Class 2A titleholder, Manchester, meets Winamac at Wabash.  Last year’s winner in Class 3A, Vincennes Lincoln, heads for Jasper to battle Princeton.  Class 4A 2002 winner, Munster, hosts its own sectional and has Lake Central as a first round opponent.

ICGSA ACADEMIC ALL-STATE TEAMS ANNOUNCED

IHSAA OVERTIME

Jim Spencer has resigned as the varsity coach in volleyball, girls basketball and softball at North Putnam.  He had been the basketball and softball coach for 4 years and volleyball coach for 1 season.

 

Bret Szabo, the defensive coordinator at Harrison the past three years, is the new head coach at Bedford North Lawrence.

 

Columbus East has introduced Danny Brown as its new girls head basketball coach.  He replaces Mel Good, who retired following the 2002-03 season.

 

Curt Feece, an assistant the past two seasons, has been selected to move up as girls head soccer coach at Plymouth.  He takes over for Tom Scott.  Rick Eaton was named assistant coach.

 

After 14 years as head coach of the Western girls basketball team, Cindy Lester has resigned.

 

Raymond “Skeeter” Heath, former boys basketball coach at Logansport, has been hired as the new girls head basketball coach at LaPorte, replacing Greg Samuelson.

 

Kevin Downey has been named head football coach at South Bend St. Joseph’s.  He succeeds Andy Strati, who left in March to take over the Goshen football program.

 

Former Elkhart Central girls swim coach Karen Leeth passed away May 23.  Her teams had won 21 sectional titles and 234 consecutive dual meet contests.  She had retired in 1994 after 23 seasons with the Blazers.
