BOYS & GIRLS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONS CROWNED

As light rain fell throughout much of the evening, the Lawrence North Wildcats ignored the conditions and used their superior depth to capture their third consecutive state title, and fourth overall, in the 100th Annual Boys Track and Field State Finals on June 6, 2003 at the Michael Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis, in front of a colorful umbrella carrying crowd of 5,333.

Winning only two events, Lawrence North, the state’s number-one ranked team in the final poll, continued to put points on the board with three second place finishes, along with a third, fourth and seventh to outdistance second place Fort Wayne Northrop, 69-44.

Complete results are available at 2003 Boys Track & Field Championship.

In contrast to the previous evening when the boys contested their championship, near-perfect weather conditions greeted the field and a crowd of 4,627 for the 30th Annual Girls Track and Field State Finals at the Michael A. Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis, on Saturday, June 7, 2003.

The state’s number-one team, Fort Wayne Northrop, was expected to be front and center in the evening’s festivities as the Bruins set out for an unprecedented fourth consecutive state title and sixth overall.  Warren Central had other ideas, as the eastside Indianapolis school gathered in three first place finishes early to take what appeared to be, at the time, a near insurmountable margin, leading by as many as 26 points as the meet wound down.

However, it all came down to the final event of the evening, the final heat of the 1600 Meter Relay.   Fort Wayne Northrop started in lane one, with Warren Central in lane four and all eyes were focused on the outcome.  But the result was settled quickly, as Northrop jumped out front early and never looked back, with Lakeesha Burnett (10), Tamara Adams (9), Natasha Fletcher (10) ad Shauntel Elcock (10) winning in a time of  3:47.94.  With Warren Central unable to do any better than fourth in the event, the Bruins and coach Tom Knudson were state champs again by a 93-85 margin.

Tiffany Redlarczyk of Lake Central High School was named recipient of the 2003 IHSAA Girls Track and Field Mental Attitude Award.

The results of the ladies’ competition are on-line at 2003 Girls Track & Field Championship.

CARMEL CAPTURES GIRLS TENNIS TEAM TITLE

It was clear from the outset that the Carmel girls’ tennis team was going to be a force to be dealt with in the girls team tennis state finals contested Saturday, June 14, 2003 at North Central (Indpls.) High School…and they did not disappoint their fans on a beautifully sunny day.

In the morning session, the lady Greyhounds lost only a total of ten games in their five matches, defeating Penn 5-0.  They came back equally as strong in the championship matchup with Jasper, knocking off the Wildcats 5-0, dropping only eight games as they captured their third state crown.  Carmel finished the season 19-0.  Jasper concluded their efforts at 18-1.

For Carmel, Sophie Grabinski (10), number-one singles, finished the campaign at 22-0.  Sister Marie (11), number-two singles, closed out at 21-0.  Number-three singles representative, Melissa Neukam (12), was 19-1 on the year.  In doubles, the number-one tandem of Elizabeth Steele (11) and Jessica Thompson (12) were 23-0 this season and the number-two unit of Nicola Evans (12) and Allison Thompson (11) finished at 19-1.

Zionsville (20-2) defeated Penn (20-3), 5-0, in the consolation match.

Lauren Woodward of Penn High School was named winner of the 2003 Girls Tennis Mental Attitude Award.  Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a check for $1,000.00 to Penn High School in her name.

The complete scoring breakdown is at 2003 Girls Tennis Team State Finals.
