BASEBALL TOURNAMENT STATE TITLES ON THE LINE

The 37th Annual Boys Baseball Tournament Series moves ahead to the semi-final and final rounds of play this Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21.  Admission to the regional tournament is $7.00 per session, $12.00 for a season ticket. 

 

Following defending Class A champion Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian’s 1-0 loss to Southwood in the semifinal game of the South Central (Union Mills) regional, all titleholders from 2002 have been eliminated.   Manchester (2A), Vincennes Lincoln(3A), and Munster (4A) were all knocked out in sectional play.

 

The only former state champ in the final field of 16 for 2003 is Jasper (1996, 1997, 1998 (3A), 2000 (3A))

Tecumseh was Class A runner-up a year ago.

 

A complete list of lineups, rosters, stats and results for all 16 teams will be available on the IHSAA website under Boys Baseball Wednesday afternoon.

FINALS NEXT IN IHSAA BOYS STATE GOLF TOURNEY

The 67th Annual Boys golf Tournament Series moves to the state finals on Wednesday and Thursday, June 18-19, at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin. 

 

Last year’s team champion, Zionsville, qualified in the Center Grove regional, finishing second behind the host Trojans, 287-296.  Junior James Sacheck of the Eagles, who finished eighth overall individually in last years IHSAA state championship (70-74—144), was medalist with 66, low score at any of the seven regional sites this year.  Sacheck will tee off at 9:30 a.m. on the 10th tee of the Road 9 on Friday.

 

Last year’s medalist in the state finals, Cole Isban (68-73—141), was this year’s medalist at LaPorte, firing a 67, leading Mishawaka Marian back to the 2003 finals, where his team finished seventh one season ago.  Isban is scheduled for a 10:23 tee time Friday morning, off the 10th tee of the Road 9.

 

Wawasee, the state’s top team in the final IHSGCA poll, qualified with the fifth lowest total among the 21 teams advancing to the state finals, with 297.

 

Media Note:  The IHSAA will not provide golf carts for the media, but they may be rented from the pro shop for personal use.  Spectators also will not be permitted the use of golf carts.  A shuttle service will be provided to move them about the course.  Scores will be updated on the IHSAA web site as the rounds are completed

Travel Advisory:  Due to extensive construction, fans and media arriving from the north are advised to use I-465 around the city to avoid road closings and detours through the main part of Indianapolis.  You may join up again with I-65 south of the city and continue on to Franklin.

GIRLS SOFTBALL CHAMPS CROWNED

In the first rematch of a previous year’s state championship game, Center Grove edged defending champ Lake Central, 2-0, to win the 2003 IHSAA Class 3A state championship at the Cherry Tree Complex in Carmel.  Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee selected Brittany Hedrick of Center Grove High School as the winner of this year’s Mental Attitude Award in Class 3A Softball.

 

Behind the strong pitching of Allie May, Gibson Southern picked up its first state softball championship, capturing the Class 2A title with a 1-0 decision over New Palestine at North Central High School in Indianapolis.  Allison May of Gibson Southern was named winner of the Class 2A Softball Mental Attitude Award following her team’s victory in the championship game.

 

Eastern (Greentown) laid claim to its first-ever state softball championship, winning the Class A title on Saturday at Hamilton Southeastern High School with a 1-0, 12-inning victory over Tecumseh.  Lauren Curosh of Whiting was named recipient of the Mental Attitude Award.

GIRLS TENNIS SINGLES/DOUBLES CHAMPS DECIDED

Senior Ashlee Davis of Anderson Highland grabbed her second consecutive IHSAA Girls Tennis Singles title on Saturday, June 14, 2003, at North Central (Indpls.) High School, defeating Carmel sophomore Sophie Grabinski in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).  Rain had forced morning play indoors, where Davis defeated Casady Pruitt (12), Merrillville, 6-2, 6-2 and Grabinski got by Michelle Hawes (11), Columbus North, 6-0, 6-2 to earn the right to meet in the finals.

 

In doubles competition, senior Jessica Thompson and junior Elizabeth Steele combined talents for a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Brooke Parrish (11) and Connie Shim (11) of Homestead, 6-3, 6-1, to take home the blue ribbons.  Thompson and Steele had knocked off Kelley Bremer (12) and Ruchika Agrawal (10) of West Lafayette earlier in the day, 6-2, 6-0.  Parrish and Shim battled their way into the finals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jenny Faulstich (12) and Jessica Vervynckt (12) of Plymouth.

IHSAA OVERTIME

Pete Oakes has been hired as the Head Boy's Soccer Coach at Franklin Central. He was previously an assistant coach at Ben Davis. He replaces Dave Wise who resigned following last season.

 

Former Hammond Gavit girls head basketball coach Tom Spina has accepted a position as assistant coach at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

 

Mike Springer has been selected new girls head basketball coach at Eastern (Greentown), replacing Sabrina Slone, who stepped down at the end of last season.  Mike Medlin will also take over the Comets’ volleyball program as head coach.

 

After six seasons, Tony Trout is stepping down as boys head golf coach at Northview.

 

Mike Logan has resigned as head baseball coach at Northridge.  In 11 seasons with the Raiders, his record was 174-113-3.

 

Josh Johnson departs Shakamak to accept the boys basketball head coaching position at Franklin County.

 

Westview has selected longtime assistant Rob Yoder as the new boys basketball coach for the Warriors, replacing Troy Neely who resigned following the 2002-03 season.

 

John Bradley has been hired as the new boys head basketball at Silver Creek.  He replaces Joe Ledbetter, who resigned in May after four seasons with the Dragons.
