FIVE NEW SCHOOLS ADMITTED TO IHSAA

At the monthly Indiana High School Athletic Association Executive Committee meeting at the organization’s headquarters in Indianapolis on September 5, 2002, applications from five new member schools were unanimously approved for membership in the IHSAA.

   Those schools are:

Ø      Elkhart Baptist Christian School, Elkhart

Ø      Holy Cross High School (Gibault, Inc.), Terre Haute

Ø      International School of Indiana, Indianapolis

Ø      Restoration Christian School, Sellersburg

Ø      Signature Learning Center, Evansville

The new arrivals may begin regular season play in any IHSAA sanctioned sport immediately, but will not be eligible to participate in IHSAA championship events until the 2004-05 season, following the normal two-year waiting period.

That brings the total of IHSAA sanctioned schools to 392 regular members, along with 7 junior members.  This year, South Bend LaSalle was closed, but Indianapolis Washington and Indianapolis Howe reopened, thus the change in total.  Both Washington and Howe, having once been members of the IHSAA, are eligible for championship competition during the 2002-03 school year.

The minutes of the September 5 meeting are available on-line at IHSAA September 5, 2002 Executive Meeting Minutes.

I.F.C.A. FOOTBALL POLL RELEASED

The Indiana Football Coaches’ Association (http://www.indianagridcoach.com/ ) has released its weekly poll.  There were no changes at the top of the respective leaderboards, but shuffling did occur in the ranks.

In 5A, Bloomington South and Portage dropped out of the top-eleven, replaced by Marion.  In 4A, Zionsville and Indianapolis Roncalli were dismissed from that upper tier and replaced by South Bend Clay and Vincennes Lincoln.  Changes in 3A found Tipton and Franklin County being supplanted by Benton Central and Hamilton Heights.  In 2A, the only changes involved the addition of Eastbrook and the subtraction of Central Noble.  In Class A, Clinton Prairie gained a spot among the chosen few and Turkey Run fell away.

Going into the fourth week of the season, three teams have yet to be scored upon.  In 5A, Portage has rolled over its three opponents by a 96 – 0 margin.  In 3A, Heritage Hills has dominated the opposition 182 – 0.  In the 2A field, North Judson has shut out the opening three teams on its schedule, 128 – 0.

FOOTBALL LEADERS UP AND RUNNING

The weekly posting of statewide individual football statistics, as reported by the schools, is now available on the IHSAA website at 2002 Football Statistics.

Early reports through the first three games have senior Ray Everhart from Castle as the state’s leading rusher, with 653 yards in 49 carries for an average of 217.6 per game.  The state’s top passer at this juncture is Mike Vlahogeorge, a junior from Lafayette Jefferson, who has thrown the ball 147 times, with 79 completions for 1,195 yards, an average of 398.3 per game.  The top receiver in the state is Reggie Smith of Harding.  The junior has 16 catches for 424 yards, averaging 141.3 per contest.

MT. VERNON (FORTVILLE) – CONNERSVILLE FOOTBALL HAD IT ALL

An interesting note from Andrew Smith of the Greenfield Daily Reporter regarding last Friday's Mt. Vernon (Fortville)-Connersville football game.  Mt. Vernon scored every way possible in the third quarter of that contest.  The scoring line for the period:

                        MV-Kyle Williams 7 run (kick blocked), 10:46 (13-6)

MV-Safety, Miller tackled in end zone, 9:20 (15-6)

                        MV-Rob Rhinesmith 33 run (Scott Niederhaus kick), 7:29 (22-6)

MV-Rob Rhinesmith 4 run (Jeff Grey pass from Scott Niederhaus), 7:09 (30-6)

                        MV-Scott Niederhaus 25 FG, 2:29 (33-6)

The final was 54-6 and was the first game at Mt. Vernon's brand-new 5,300-seat stadium. MV had played on the road for nearly a year while the old stadium was being bulldozed (to make way for a new school building) and the new one being built.
