253 TEAMS ENTERED FOR GIRLS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

A field of 253 teams, representing 1,818 athletes, has filed entry lists for the 30th annual IHSAA Girls Golf Tournament Series to be contested at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin, just south of Indianapolis, beginning this week.

Among those entered are the Artesians of Martinsville, nine-time winners of the championship, the most recent of which occurred in 2000.  Western, located in Russiaville, garnered its first-ever girls golf title last year.  The Panthers are ranked number-one again in this week’s poll and return with a strong squad seeking to defend that title.

Sectional play will begin Friday, September 20, and continue on the following Saturday and Monday.  The regionals are slated for September 28, with the finals on October 4 and 5.  Admission is free at all levels of the state tourney.

WESTERN SHOWS WAY AGAIN IN ICGSA GIRLS GOLF POLL

The Panthers of Western are again at the top of the heap in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association poll.  Noblesville, Penn and Lafayette Jefferson remain three-four-five, while Carmel moves into the front-five.

Fremont and Roncalli were part of a three-way tie for 20th position last week, but have been replaced by Anderson Highland and Culver Academy.

FOOTBALL RANKINGS RELEASED

And then there were none.  Going into last Friday’s play, three teams in the state had not yet been scored upon.  That all changed as North Judson’s shutout streak came to an end when Culver Military managed a touchdown and point-after.  Merrillville put a pair of TD’s on the board against Portage to stop their streak.  And Heritage Hills was simply happy to outscore Jasper in their 23-21 win.
