GIRLS GOLF MOVES TO REGIONAL ROUND

Twenty-one teams, and sixty-seven individuals not on an advancing team, have moved on to the regional round of the 2002 IHSAA Girls Golf Tournament Series, with competition continuing at seven sites this Saturday, September 28.

Defending state champ and number-one ranked Western hosted its own sectional and was the only school to keep its four-player total under 300, as the Panthers turned in a 291, some 53 strokes better than runner-up Northwestern.  Four members of the team broke 80:  Amber Lindgren, 71; Lynnsey Showers, 72; Killene Pulley 72; and Lauren Showers 76.

The closest competition occurred in Sullivan, as Terre Haute South and Northview both turned in cards totaling 347.  At Anderson Highland, Yorktown edged out Delta by a single shot, 347 – 348.  It was also a single shot which separated Marion and Peru at Huntington North, with the Giants firing a 358 to the Tigers 359.

Martinsville, which has captured the state title nine of the previous eleven years, failed to qualify for the regional round of this year’s event, losing out to Center Grove, Bloomington South and Bloomington North in the Bloomington North sectional. However, the Artesians did advance two ladies, Sarah Bires (77) and Erin Clossey (84), as individuals not on a qualifying team

WESTERN #1 IN FINAL GIRLS GOLF POLL

The Panthers of Western High School finished the season right where they began, at number-one in the final regular season ICGSA Girls Golf Poll.  Noblesville maintained its position at number-two, but Hamilton Southeastern replaced Penn in third, with the Kingsmen dropping to fourth and last week’s number-five team, Carmel, was replaced in that slot by Lafayette Jefferson.

Only one of the state’s top-twenty teams, Martinsville, failed to advance.  Here’s a look at the regional assignments for those ranked squads.
