PAIRINGS SET FOR GIRLS GOLF FINALS

Twenty-one teams, and twenty-two individuals not on an advancing team, have moved on to the state finals of the 2002 IHSAA Girls Golf Tournament Series, with competition this Friday and Saturday, October 3-4, at The Legends of Indiana golf Club in Franklin.

Defending state champ and number-one ranked Western will lead the field into the final 36-holes, but will face stiff competition from a Noblesville squad which turned in a regional-best 302 score at Westwood Country Club in New Castle, beating second place Carmel by some forty-three strokes.  The Millers were led by seniors Sally Shonk, who fired a 71 in Saturday’s competition, and Ashley Prange, who finished with 72.  Homestead’s Connie Shim, a junior, also had an outstanding afternoon, getting around the Cobblestone Golf Course in Kendallville in 72.

The closest competition occurred at the Otis Park Golf Course in Bedford, were Northview and Evansville Memorial battled to a tie, with team totals of 351.  The Knights of Northview were awarded the top spot by virtue of the fifth player’s score.

Play will begin on the first and tenth tees at 8:00 a.m. this Friday.  Advancement from Round 1 to Round 2 includes the top nine teams, plus any team within 20 strokes of the lead after round 1, plus the top 9 individuals, excluding those individuals who’s team advances to Round 2, plus any individual within 6 strokes of the lead after Round 1.  Admission is free to this IHSAA championship event.

For complete information and tee times for this year’s IHSAA state championship, log on to 2002 Girls Golf State Finals.

The boys & girls soccer tourney draw will take place at the IHSAA office at 8:00 a.m., Thursday, October 3, and will be posted on the web site (ihsaa.org) under boys and girls soccer shortly after the completion of the draw.

FOOTBALL RANKINGS RELEASED

There were changes aplenty in this week’s IFCA Class 5A poll, as Evansville Reitz, Portage and Marion were all defeated and shoved out of the top-ten.  In 4A, number-two Delta, with a loss to Pendleton Heights slid to eighth, with Fort Wayne Dwenger jumping into the runner-up position.  With losses, Mooresville and DeKalb were dropped from the top-ten.  In 3A, the top four squads were solid, but number-five Benton Central lost to Twin Lakes, which dropped them to tenth.  In 2A, number-five Jimtown came up on the short end of the score with Concord and slipped to number-eight, while Fort Wayne Luers and Rochester both suffered losses and dropped aside, with Rensselaer and Seeger gaining spots this week.  In Class A, Southern Wells and South Putnam exchanged places for sixth and seventh.  Eastern Hancock, with a loss to Tipton, fell out of the elite-ten, while Clinton Central moved to ninth and North White put in an appearance at number-ten.

The latest football statistics through week six of the 2002 season are updated as they are reported to the IHSAA by the respective schools and compiled on the web at 2002 Football Leaders.

BLOOMINGTON NORTH STAYS ATOP BOYS TENNIS POLL

Bloomington North remained in the top spot in the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association weekly poll.  There was little shuffling among this week’s leaders as the remainder of the top-five held their positions, with Center Grove, North Central (Indpls.), Delta and Park Tudor following in order.  Despite a couple of minor adjustments, heading into the state tournament the entire top-twenty managed to stay there in this week’s voting.

For a complete look at the latest boys tennis news, log on to 2002 IHSTeCA Boys Tennis.

CHANGES IN BOYS TENNIS SECTIONAL HOSTS

There have been three changes in the sectional sites for the upcoming boys tennis tournament, which get underway Thursday, October 3.

The host school in sectional #31 (Batesville, Lawrenceburg, Milan, South Dearborn) is changed from Lawrenceburg to Batesville.  Sectional #60 (Boonville, Castle, Heritage Hills, South Spencer, Tecumseh, Tell City) moves from Tecumseh to Tell City.  Sectional #61 (South Vermillion, Sullivan, T.H. North, T.H. South, West Vigo) will now be hosted by Terre Haute South, rather than Terre Haute North.

The complete listing of sectional participants is available at 2002 Boys Tennis Tournament.

The team state finals will be played at North Central (Indpls.) October 19, with the singles/doubles on October 25-26.

CROSS COUNTRY POLL ADJUSTMENTS

After one week at the top of the heap, Columbus North dropped into the number-two position in this week’s girls’ Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches poll.  Valparaiso, last week’ runner-up unit, jumped back into the leader’s spot, with Chesterton remaining third.  Fort Wayne Concordia moved from sixth to fourth and Indianapolis Cathedral stayed put at number-five

On the boys’ side, Columbus North maintained its stranglehold on the top spot.  Fort Wayne Northrop stayed at number-two.  Carmel climbed up a notch to third, with Lawrence North dropping a spot to fourth and Hamilton Southeastern solidifying it’s grasp on the fifth rung.

For a complete look at this week’s polls and more cross country info, check out the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches website at IATCC.

#1 TEAMS STILL THE SAME IN VOLLEYBALL

There were no changes at the top of the lists in all four classes of girls volleyball in this week’s Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches poll:  Muncie Central stayed in the top 4A position; Indianapolis Chatard in 3A; Brownstown Central in 2A; and Michigan City Marquette in class A.

A reminder that the pairings for this year’s state tourney will be drawn at the IHSAA office at 12:00 noon on Monday, October 14 and will be posted on the website upon completion.
