FULL SLATE OF VOLLEYBALL SECTIONALS BEGIN THURSDAY

The 2002 IHSAA Girls Volleyball Tournament gets underway this Thursday, October 24, at 64 sites and concludes on November 9 with the state finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Jasper is the all-time leader in sectional victories with 25, including last year.  The Wildcats have won thirteen consecutive sectionals, dating back to 1989. Second on the all-time wins list is Evansville Mater Dei with twenty-three.  Those Wildcats also have the all-time mark of consecutive sectional titles with nineteen, from 1978-79 through 1996-97.  Carmel, Clinton Prairie and Providence are all tied for third on that list of total titles with 22.

Class 4A top-ranked Muncie Central will open up tournament play against Anderson in the Bearcats’ own sectional.  Indianapolis Chatard, number-one in 3A, goes into action in the Greenfield-Central sectional with New Palestine providing the opening round competition.  The top team in 3A, Brownstown Central, travels to Austin to square off against Switzerland County in the opening contest of that sectional.  Michigan City Marquette, the leader in Class A, moves into the bye game of the Westville sectional, meeting Whiting.

Pairings for the 31st annual tournament are available online at 2002 Volleyball Tournament Pairings.

CROSS COUNTRY MAKES RUN TO SEMI-STATE

The 57th Annual Boys and 22nd Annual Girls Cross Country Tournaments will move into the semi-state round on Saturday, October 26, at Franklin Central, Manchester, New Prairie and Terre Haute North.

Carmel is the all-time leader in boys’ semi-state wins with fifteen, the last coming in 2000.  Portage is second with thirteen.

The Greyhounds are also the ladies’ leader in semi-state victories, having grabbed ten, including last year’s meet at Franklin Central.

Franklin, unranked in this week’s IATCC poll, will be looking to defend its 2001-02 title on the boys’ side of the ledger.  The Grizzly Cubs qualified fifth in the Franklin Central regional and will return for  the Franklin Central semi-state.

In girls’ competition, Carmel looks to add another notch to its state championship win column.  The defending champs have rolled to ten titles since the beginning of state competition in 1981.  The Greyhounds are rated 13th in this week’s poll and qualified in the number-one spot in the Noblesville regional, advancing to the Franklin Central semi-state.

For boys tournament regional results, go to 2002 Boys Cross Country.   For girls tournament regional results, click on 2002 Girls Cross Country.  The state championships will be on the line on November 2.

CROSS COUNTRY POLL LEADERS STILL OUT FRONT
