The latest football statistics through week ten of the 2002 season are updated as they are reported to the IHSAA by the respective schools and compiled on the web at 2002 Football Leaders.

RYAN KECKLEY, S.B. ST. JOE, CAPTURES BOYS TENNIS SINGLES CROWN

HOLLANDER & VALINETZ OF N.C. DOUBLES CHAMPS

South Bend St. Joseph’s Ryan Keckley and the North Central doubles team of Ryan Hollander and Adam Valinetz were crowned state champions after winning their respective tournaments on October 26, 2002 at Five Seasons Sports Country Club in Indianapolis.

Keckley completed a perfect 26-0 season (10-0 tournament) with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kokomo senior Matt Zollman in the championship match of the IHSAA state tournament for No. 1 singles players. The senior becomes the first St. Joseph’s player to win the state singles tournament and the first to play in the title match since Chris Varga finished as the runner-up in 1997. Zollman, who finished 27-2, was the first Kokomo player to make it to the final round. This year’s match for all the marbles was a repeat of last year’s consolation match which Keckley also won 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles, Hollander and Valinetz took a straight set victory from Park Tudor’s Ryan Gershman and Jon Lee, 7-5, 6-0, in the championship competition to finish 26-1, including 8-0 in the post-season.  It was the North Central duo’s third victory in three meetings this season between the neighboring schools’ top doubles teams.  Hollander and Valinetz also became the fifth North Central team to win the doubles tournament and first in seven years.

Full results are available on the IHSAA web site at 2002 Boys Singles/Doubles Championships.

VOLLEYBALL REGIONALS COMING UP

The 2002 IHSAA Girls Volleyball Tournament moves to the regional round this Saturday, November 2, at 16 sites.  The State Finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis are slated for November 9.

Mishawaka and Muncie Burris are the all-time leaders in regionals won, with seventeen.  Mishawaka’s last regional triumph came in 1999, while Muncie Burris was a regional champ a year ago.  Jasper is next in line on that list, with fourteen.  The Wildcats last advancement to the semi-state occurred in 1998.

Class 4A top-ranked Muncie Central has six regional wins.  The Bearcats (35-1) meet Fort Wayne Northrop at Huntington North.  Indianapolis Chatard (33-2), number-one in 3A, has been a regional title holder three times and will play Franklin County at Greenfield-Central. The top team in 2A, Brownstown Central, has a pair of regional crowns to its credit.  The Lady Braves (33-2) head for Forest Park to meet the host Rangers in search of their third regional victory.  In Class A, Michigan City Marquette (32-3), leader in that class since pre-season, has captured five regionals and will square off against West Central in action at Caston.
