VOLLEYBALL STATE FINALS SATURDAY

   The 31st IHSAA Girls Volleyball Tournament moves to the semi-state and state finals rounds this Saturday, November 9, 2002, with action at four sites starting at 9:00 a.m. 

 

Class A at Hinkle Fieldhouse:     #1 Michigan City Marquette (34-3) vs. Tecumseh (25-6);

                                                #9 Oldenburg Academy (31-4) vs. #2 Wapahani (33-6)

 

Class 2A at Ben Davis High School:       Triton (27-9) vs. #1 Brownstown Central (34-2)

                                                            Union County (26-10) vs. #2 Muncie Burris (32-6)

 

Class 3A at Lawrence North High School:          Highland (27-7) vs. #3 Delta (30-7)

                                                                        #5 Providence (30-7) vs. #6 Fort Wayne Luers (31-8)

 

Class 4A at North Central (Indpls.) High School:             #1 Muncie Central (37-1) vs. #5 Bloomington North (32-5)

                                                                                    #3 Indianapolis Cathedral (32-6) vs. #4 Penn (33-4)

 

 

   The morning winners advance to the state finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.  The Class A title is on the line at 2:30 p.m.; the 2A crown at 4:00 p.m.; the 3A up for grabs at 5:30; and the 5A championship at 7:00 p.m.

 

   Admission prices are $12.00 for a season ticket and $7.00 for a single-session ticket

 

   Muncie Burris is the state’s all-time leader in championships won, with thirteen, including the last five in a row.  Steve Shondell, who is Indiana’s all-time winningest volleyball coach, has been at the helm of the Owls for each of those titles.

 

   Indianapolis Cathedral (1997-3A, 1999-3A, 2001-4A), Muncie Central (1997-4A, 1998-4A, 1999-4A) and Michigan City Marquette (1997-4A, 1998-4A, 1999-4A) each have three state titles.  Delta was the big winner in Class 3A a year ago. The remaining members of the final field are looking for their first state championships.

 

   Brownstown Central (1998-2A, 1999-2A), Delta (1997-3A, 1998-3A), Union County (1997-2A), Muncie Burris (1983), Fort Wayne Luers (2001-3A), Muncie Central (2000-4A) and Indianapolis Cathedral (2000-3A) all have earned runner-up awards for their trophy cases.

SECTIONAL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT

   The 30th Annual IHSAA Football State Tournament kicks moves into the championship round of the sectionals this Friday night, November 8.  The matchups are available on the IHSAA web at 2002 Football Pairings.  The state finals will be played at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis on Friday, November 29, and Saturday, November 30.

 

   Defending 5A state champion Ben Davis travels to Indianapolis Northwest.  4A defending state titlist Jasper heads for top-ranked Vincennes Lincoln.  In 3A, last year’s winner, Indianapolis Chatard will host Danville.  The 2A winner from 2001-02, Fort Wayne is home to Heritage.  Southern Wells, which grabbed the single A crown a year ago, was knocked out of the title chase by Madison-Grant, 39-38.

 

   Football state finals credential requests may be made on company letterhead and mailed or faxed to Jerry Baker no later than November 25.  Requests received by November 18 will be mailed out to those approved working members of the media, otherwise they must be picked up at the gate.
