The 31st IHSAA Girls Volleyball

Muncie Burris is
the state’s all-time leader in championships won, with thirteen, including the
last five in a row. Steve Shondell, who is
Indianapolis Cathedral (1997-3A, 1999-3A, 2001-4A), Muncie Central (1997-4A, 1998-4A, 1999-4A) and
Michigan City Marquette (1997-4A, 1998-4A, 1999-4A) each
have three state titles. Delta was the
big winner in Class 3A a year ago. The remaining members of the final
field are looking for their first state championships.
Brownstown Central (1998-2A, 1999-2A), Delta
(1997-3A, 1998-3A), Union County (1997-2A), Muncie Burris (1983), Fort Wayne Luers (2001-3A), Muncie Central (2000-4A) and Indianapolis
Cathedral (2000-3A) all have earned runner-up awards for their trophy cases.

GIRLS
BASKETBALL SEASON SET TO TIP-OFF
The 2002-03 IHSAA girls basketball season
officially gets underway next Monday, November 11. Last year’s 4A champion, Terre Haute South,
will begin play on November 14th and 15th in the six team Terre Haute North Tournament. The 3A defending titleholder, Fort Wayne
Bishop Luers, starts play on the 12th at

EARN MENTAL
ATTITUDE AWARDS
After winning individual honors, Nef Araia of Lawrence North was honored
with the Charles F. Maas Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA
Executive Committee.
He is the fifth cross country state champion
to also be named the boys mental attitude award winner, which is presented to
the top senior each year who has best demonstrated excellence in mental
attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in the four years of
high school. The award is named in honor of Charles F. Maas, the late assistant
commissioner of the IHSAA from 1973-1984.
Cassie Hunt, a senior from
Hunt, competing in this year’s state meet as
an individual qualifier, placed 14th overall in a time of
NORTH CENTRAL (INDPLS.) AND
CAPTURE
SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS
North Central (Indpls.)
won the 2002 Boys Soccer championship 2-1 over Fort Wayne Canterbury on senior Bill
Welch’s goal in a shootout (3-2). It was
the Panther’s fourth state championship in the tournament’s nine year history (1994,
1995, 1996).
North Central’s goal in regulation time came

Kent Melchiors of
Evansville Memorial was selected by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee as
the winner of the C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award in Boys Soccer.
In a class of 212,
Meghan Marie Fowler-Finn of Fort Wayne
Snider was selected by the IHSAA Executive Committee as recipient of the 2002
Mental Attitude Award in Girls Soccer.
Meghan Marie ranks first in her senior class
of 426 and will major in Physical Sciences in college. A two-year member of the National Honor
Society, she was named ISCA and ICGSA Academic All-State in 2001 and 2002 and
is a four-year member of the Student Council at
