VOLLEYBALL STATE FINALS SATURDAY

   The 31st IHSAA Girls Volleyball Tournament moves to the semi-state and state finals rounds this Saturday, November 9, 2002, with action at four sites starting at 9:00 a.m. 

 

Class A at Hinkle Fieldhouse:     #1 Michigan City Marquette (34-3) vs. Tecumseh (25-6);

                                                #9 Oldenburg Academy (31-4) vs. #2 Wapahani (33-6)

 

Class 2A at Ben Davis High School:       Triton (27-9) vs. #1 Brownstown Central (34-2)

                                                            Union County (26-10) vs. #2 Muncie Burris (32-6)

 

Class 3A at Lawrence North High School:          Highland (27-7) vs. #3 Delta (30-7)

                                                                        #5 Providence (30-7) vs. #6 Fort Wayne Luers (31-8)

 

Class 4A at North Central (Indpls.) High School:             #1 Muncie Central (37-1) vs. #5 Bloomington North (32-5)

   The morning winners advance to the state finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.  The Class A title is on the line at 2:30 p.m.; the 2A crown at 4:00 p.m.; the 3A up for grabs at 5:30; and the 5A championship at 7:00 p.m.

 

   Admission prices are $12.00 for a season ticket and $7.00 for a single-session ticket

 

   Muncie Burris is the state’s all-time leader in championships won, with thirteen, including the last five in a row.  Steve Shondell, who is Indiana’s all-time winningest volleyball coach, has been at the helm of the Owls for each of those titles.

 

   Indianapolis Cathedral (1997-3A, 1999-3A, 2001-4A), Muncie Central (1997-4A, 1998-4A, 1999-4A) and Michigan City Marquette (1997-4A, 1998-4A, 1999-4A) each have three state titles.  Delta was the big winner in Class 3A a year ago. The remaining members of the final field are looking for their first state championships.

 

   Brownstown Central (1998-2A, 1999-2A), Delta (1997-3A, 1998-3A), Union County (1997-2A), Muncie Burris (1983), Fort Wayne Luers (2001-3A), Muncie Central (2000-4A) and Indianapolis Cathedral (2000-3A) all have earned runner-up awards for their trophy cases.

SECTIONAL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT

   The 30th Annual IHSAA Football State Tournament kicks moves into the championship round of the sectionals this Friday night, November 8.  The matchups are available on the IHSAA web at 2002 Football Pairings.  The state finals will be played at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis on Friday, November 29, and Saturday, November 30.

 

   Defending 5A state champion Ben Davis travels to Indianapolis Northwest.  4A defending state titlist Jasper heads for top-ranked Vincennes Lincoln.  In 3A, last year’s winner, Indianapolis Chatard will host Danville.  The 2A winner from 2001-02, Fort Wayne is home to Heritage.  Southern Wells, which grabbed the single A crown a year ago, was knocked out of the title chase by Madison-Grant, 39-38.

 

   Football state finals credential requests may be made on company letterhead and mailed or faxed to Jerry Baker no later than November 25.  Requests received by November 18 will be mailed out to those approved working members of the media, otherwise they must be picked up at the gate.

   The latest football statistics through week eleven of the 2002 season are updated as they are reported to the IHSAA by the respective schools and compiled on the web at 2002 Football Leaders.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL SEASON SET TO TIP-OFF

   The 2002-03 IHSAA girls basketball season officially gets underway next Monday, November 11.  Last year’s 4A champion, Terre Haute South, will begin play on November 14th and 15th in the six team Terre Haute North Tournament.  The 3A defending titleholder, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, starts play on the 12th at Angola.  The 2001-02 2A tourney winner, Southwestern (Hanover), also jumps into action on the 12th at Salem.  North Vermillion, winner in class A, will start the season at home against Attica on the 12th.

   The boys programs around the state have begun their pre-season practice and will begin play on November 25, 2002.

 

COLUMBUS NORTH  AND VALPARAISO WIN CROSS COUNTRY TITLES

   Columbus North’s boys team and senior Nef Araia of Lawrence North, who set a course record, climbed the awards stand as state champions of the 57th annual IHSAA Boys Cross Country State Championships on Saturday, November 2, 2002 at the Indiana University Cross Country Course in Bloomington.

 

   The runner-up for the second time in three years was Carmel with 124 points. Fort Wayne Northrop placed third with 138 points; Lawrence

 

   The Valparaiso girls team and Carmel junior Katie Harrington won state championships in the 22nd annual IHSAA Girls Cross Country State Finals on Saturday, November 2, 2002 at the Indiana University Cross Country Course in Bloomington.

 

   The Vikings totaled 121 points to runner-up Northridge’s 127. The six-point difference was the second-closest finish between the top two teams in the history of the meet. The closest was Floyd Central’s two-point victory over Carmel in 1991. Chesterton finished third in this year’s meet with 143 points, while Columbus North was fourth at 154 and West Lafayette fifth with 172.

LAWRENCE NORTH’S NEF ARAIA AND NORTH PUTNAM’S CASSIE HUNT

EARN MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARDS

  After winning individual honors, Nef Araia of Lawrence North was honored with the Charles F. Maas Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

 

   He is the fifth cross country state champion to also be named the boys mental attitude award winner, which is presented to the top senior each year who has best demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in the four years of high school. The award is named in honor of Charles F. Maas, the late assistant commissioner of the IHSAA from 1973-1984.

 

   Cassie Hunt, a senior from North Putnam High School, was named this year’s winner of the Mental Attitude Award in girls Cross Country by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

 

   Hunt, competing in this year’s state meet as an individual qualifier, placed 14th overall in a time of 14:55. She had placed 13th overall a year ago.

 

NORTH CENTRAL (INDPLS.) AND CARMEL

CAPTURE SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS

   North Central (Indpls.) won the 2002 Boys Soccer championship 2-1 over Fort Wayne Canterbury on senior Bill Welch’s goal in a shootout (3-2).  It was the Panther’s fourth state championship in the tournament’s nine year history (1994, 1995, 1996). Canterbury and North Central have accounted for seven of the nine state championships;

 

   North Central’s goal in regulation time came when Canterbury had a pass bounce off a North Central defender and into the net to put the Panthers up 1-0.  A short time later, North Central allowed its first goal in eight tourney games, when senior Kyle Schwartz banged home the tying score for the Cavaliers, setting up overtime.

 

   Carmel became the first unbeaten and untied girls team to win the state championship in the nine year history of the event, as they captured a 4-0 victory over Bloomington South.  It was the sixth state title for the Greyhounds and their third consecutive (1994, 1995, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002).

 

   Greyhound goals came from Anne Sommer, who scored twice, including the go-ahead marker less than five minutes into the game.  The other Carmel tallies came from sophomore Angie Muir and senior Mary Beth Robinson.

EVANSVILLE MEMORIAL’S KENT MELCHIORS AND FORT WAYNE SNIDER’S MEGHAN MARIE FOWLER-FINN WIN MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARDS

   Kent Melchiors of Evansville Memorial was selected by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee as the winner of the C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award in Boys Soccer.

 

   In a class of 212, Kent ranks first scholastically and is a member of the National Honor Society.  He was awarded the Purdue University Social Studies Award and was named to Evansville's All-City Academic Team.  Notre Dame is his college of choice, where he will major in Math and Science.

 

   Meghan Marie Fowler-Finn of Fort Wayne Snider was selected by the IHSAA Executive Committee as recipient of the 2002 Mental Attitude Award in Girls Soccer.

 

   Meghan Marie ranks first in her senior class of 426 and will major in Physical Sciences in college.  A two-year member of the National Honor Society, she was named ISCA and ICGSA Academic All-State in 2001 and 2002 and is a four-year member of the Student Council at Snider High School, having held positions of president, vice president and treasurer with the organization.

MILESTONES

With his 81st victory last Friday, Brad Park has moved into a tie with Ken Mirer as the winningest coaches in Goshen football history.  Park is now 81-33.  Mirer was 81-36 in eleven seasons with the Redskins from 1974 to 1984.
