FOOTBALL CHAMPS DON CROWNS AT THE DOME

   Over the Thanksgiving weekend, five new state champions were crowned at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis in the 2002 IHSAA State Football Championships.

 

   In 5A, Ben Davis picked up its 7th state title to become the all-time leader in titles captured in football.  Close behind with six state championships are Roncalli, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard and Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, winners in 4A, 3A and 2A respectively.  Southwood gained its first championship trophy in any sport.

MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD WINNERS

   Following each of the state championship games, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee were on hand to award the Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award.  The award is annually presented in each classification of the football state finals to the senior player best representing excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. The award is named in honor of Phil N. Eskew, the IHSAA’s third commissioner from 1962-1976.

 

  This year’s recipients included:  Marcus Heminger of Fort Wayne Snider in 5A; Tyler Warner of Roncalli in 4A; Michael Dury of Indianapolis Bishop Chatard in Class 3A; Brett Bueltel of Southridge inClass 2A; and

Kole Ames of South Putnam in Class A.

GIRLS BASKETBALL LEADERS UNCHANGED

  The names remained the same among the leaders in the four classes of girls’ basketball for the week ending December 2, 2002.

 

   Kokomo’s Lady Wildkats remained number-one in 4A, with Alexandria’s Tigers atop the rankings in 3A, the Southwestern (Hanover) Rebels in 2A and the North Vermillion Falcons in Class A.

MILESTONES

 

Betsy Bowser of Cass scored her 1,000th career point in the Kings’ game against Northfield on November 20.  She becomes the third player from the school to reach that milestone:  Angie Cree, 1,434; Sharon Schreyer, 1,163.

 

Senior Whitney Espenlaub of New Harmony scored 28 points against Galatia (IL) on November 30, giving her a career total of 1,445 points, moving her past 1997 graduate Jill Reynolds and into the number-one position in career scoring for the Rappites and Posey County.  In that same game, senior Jackie Moore scored 27 points to move past the 1000-point career mark/

 

IHSAA OVERTIME

   Clayton Richard of McCutcheon and defensive lineman Bryan Mattison of Penn have been invited to play in the third annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl on January 5, 2003 in San Antonio, Texas.  In twelve games with the Mavericks this past season, Richard was 182/307 for 2,933 yards and 27 touchdowns.

 

  Fifteen men have been chosen to be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame as members of  the 2003 Silver Anniversary Team.  They include:  John Brown, Washington; Wallace Bryant, Gary Emerson; Craig Buffie, Bloomington South; Curt Clawson, Batesville; Thaddeus Garner, Hammond Noll; Ted Kitchel, Lewis Cass; Brad Leaf, Lawrence North; David Magley, South Bend LaSalle; Jack Moore, Muncie Central; George Sweigart, Fort Wayne North; Landon Turner, Indianapolis Arsenal Technical; Dale White, Covington; Kevin Willour, Huntington North; Randy Wittman, Ben Davis; David "Poncho" Wright, Indianapolis Marshall.  The induction ceremonies will take place on March 26, 2003.
