MILESTONES

Benton Central named its football field after Herschell "Hook" Mallory during ceremonies Aug. 25. He served as the school’s first athletic director from 1968-1984.

Clint Bobb, a senior at Seymour, broke the school’s 30-year-old career touchdown record Aug. 25 against Jeffersonville. He scored six times against the Red Devils to run his career total to 48. The former record was 47, set in 1970 by current U.S. Congressman Baron Hill. Bobb also eclipsed the school’s career rushing touchdown record set by Michael Batts in 1991. Bobb left the game with 43 rushing touchdowns. Bobb also owns the school career rushing yardage record.

Bob Copeland, football coach at Danville, celebrated his 100th victory at the school Aug. 25 as the Warriors defeated Crawfordsville 48-7. Copeland, who directed Eastern Hancock to the IHSAA Class A title in 1985, is in his 12th season at Danville.

Hammond Morton named its football field in honor of former coach Maurey Zlotnik during season-opening ceremonies Aug. 18. Zlotnik coached the Governors from 1952-1977, compiling a record of 114-82-8 and highlighted by a mythical state championship in 1965.

Landon Hinman, a senior at DeKalb, broke the school record for receiving yardage in a game when he grabbed eight passes for 209 yards in a 28-0 victory over New Haven on Sept. 1. The previous mark was 163 by Josh Barnett against Norwell in 1993.

Hobart honored late football coach Don Howell by renaming its stadium the Don Howell Field at Brickie Bowl during season-opening ceremonies Aug. 18. Howell died Nov. 28, 1999, just months after retiring from teaching and coaching following a legendary career that included a 314-73 record in 33 seasons with four IHSAA state titles.

Robbi Petre, a running back at Clinton Central, broke the school’s career rushing record Aug. 18 with 272 yards in a 46-6 victory over Taylor. He left the game with 3,982 career yards. He has since moved that total to 4,283 yards to rank 34th on the state’s career rushing list.

Travis Reynolds, a senior at Mitchell, has become the school’s career leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. Mark Watterson set all three records in 1978. Reynolds ranks second on the state season receiving list this season with 25 catches for 426 yards and three touchdowns. With 128 career receptions, he’s within striking distance of the state record of 177 set by P.K. Williams of Tri-West Hendricks in 1985.

Robbie Robinson, a junior at North Central (Indianapolis), broke the school’s single-game rushing record Aug. 25 when he carried 32 times for 285 yards as the Panthers defeated Richmond 48-35.
