IHSAA Media Release of Oct. 4, 2000

A field of 309 schools drawn for 28th IHSAA Football Tournament

A field of 309 schools will begin competition Oct. 22 in the 28th annual IHSAA Football Tournament. The field consists of 62 schools in Class A, 63 schools in Class 2A, 62 schools in Class 3A, 61 schools in Class 4A and 61 schools in Class 5A.

The field has one more team than in 1999. Wheeler High School, who is playing varsity football for the first time in 2000, has entered its first IHSAA tournament. The Bearcats drew Glenn in Class 2A Sectional 25. Because of the addition of Wheeler, two teams in Class 2A were assigned to different sectionals than in 1999. Teams affected were Winamac (Sectional 25 to Sectional 26), and Madison-Grant (Sectional 26 to Sectional 29).

There were no sectional assignment changes from 1999 in the other four classes.

As determined by the blind draw, sectional play will begin Oct. 20 across the state. While most tournament games will be played on Fridays, the competing schools may have the option to move a game to Saturday because of lengthy travel. Sectional play will continue the weekends of Oct. 27-28 and Nov. 3-4.

Regional competition is Nov. 10 or Nov. 11, with the semi-states Nov. 17 or 18. For the 17th year, the state championship games will be played Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 24-25, at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. On Nov. 24, the Class A championship will be played at 3:30 p.m. and the Class 2A championship will be played at 7 p.m. On Nov. 25, the 3A championship will be at noon, the 4A championship at 3:30 p.m. and the 5A championship at 7:05 p.m.

DETERMINATION OF SECTIONAL SITES

First-Round Games

The team named first in the draw is host school unless the two schools agree to switch the site.

Second-Round Games

The team without a home game in the first round will be the host. Exception: A team that has a first-round bye always will be the visitor for second-round games. If both teams were home or both were visitors in the first round, the team named first in the draw will be the host.

Third-Round Games

The host team will be the team that has played the most away sectional games. If both teams have played the same number of away games, the team on top of the bracket (drawn first) will be the host.

DETERMINATION OF REGIONAL SITES

Classes 2A & 4A

The team that traveled for the sectional championship game will host, if applicable. If both teams were away for the sectional championship or both were home, the higher-numbered sectional will host. Example: Sectional 20 would host Sectional 19.

Classes A, 3A, 5A

The team that traveled for the sectional championship game will host, if applicable. If both teams were away for the sectional championship or both were home, the lower-numbered sectional will host. Example: Sectional 1 would host Sectional 2.
