Jasper seeks title repeat in boys tennis

Unbeatens Homestead and Munster square off, while defending champion Jasper meets North Central in the 34th Annual IHSAA Boys Tennis Teams State Finals Saturday (Oct. 14) at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

The field is nearly identical to 1999 when Jasper emerged as a first-time champion. Homestead and Munster also advanced to the finals a year ago. North Central replaced Center Grove after defeating the Trojans in the first round of last Saturday’s North Central Semi-State.

In the 1999 state finals, Jasper defeated Homestead 3-2 in the semifinals and then topped Center Grove 3-2 in the championship round for its first IHSAA title in boys tennis. Homestead took third place with a 3-2 triumph over Munster.

North Central leads the state with 15 IHSAA Boys Tennis state championships. But the Panthers have reached the state finals for the first time since 1996. Homestead and Munster seek their first titles. It’s the 14th state finals trip for Homestead and the eighth for Munster.

In the most recent coaches association poll, Homestead was ranked No. 1, North Central No. 3, Jasper No. 6 and Munster No. 11.

In head-to-head competition this year among the field, Homestead defeated Jasper 4-1. All four teams competed in the John Shirley Invitational at North Central, won by Homestead. North Central finished second, Jasper sixth and Munster seventh.

Individually, the field’s best record belongs to senior Ryan Recht, Homestead’s No. 1 singles player at 26-0. He finished third in the 1999 state singles competition. He is the only undefeated singles player in the state finals field.

Also on tap for Saturday are the regional rounds of the IHSAA singles and doubles competitions. Those winners will advance to the state finals next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 20-21) at Five Seasons Sports Country Club in Indianapolis.
