16 teams enter 2000 IHSAA football

tournament with perfect records

Defending state champions Fort Wayne Luers (Class 2A) and Indianapolis Cathedral (Class 4A) headline a list of 16 teams that enter the 2000 IHSAA Football Tournament this week with perfect regular-season records.

For the first time since the IHSAA expanded the playoff format to include five classes in 1985, no Class 5A team navigated the regular season unscathed. Bloomington South was the last to fall, suffering a 24-14 loss at Decatur Central last week that ended a 45-game regular-season winning streak.

There are five unbeaten teams in Class 4A, two in Class 3A, six in Class 2A and three in Class A. There also were 16 unbeaten teams during the 1999 regular season. That compares to 17 in 1998 and 1997, 20 in 1996 and 19 in 1995.

Attica (Class A), Brownstown Central (2A), Heritage Hills (3A) and Owen Valley (4A) enjoyed their second consecutive unbeaten regular seasons. With Bloomington South’s loss, Heritage Hills owns the state’s longest unbeaten regular-season string at 23 games. During that streak, the Patriots have posted 12 shutouts.

Fort Wayne Luers owns the state’s longest overall winning streak at 17 games, followed by Indianapolis Cathedral at 16.

Indianapolis Cathedral (9-0) begins its title defense against Avon (7-2) at Indianapolis Broad Ripple in Class 4A Sectional 15. That field also includes Plainfield (9-0), which opens at home against Greenwood (3-6). The Plainfield-Greenwood winner will meet the Indianapolis Cathedral-Avon winner in the second round.

The only first round battle of unbeatens comes in Class 4A Sectional 16 where Jasper (9-0) and Owen Valley (9-0) square off Friday at Spencer. The survivor of that match advances to play the winner of Vincennes Lincoln (8-1) vs. Northview (2-7). The Sectional 15 champion will meet the Sectional 16 champion in regional play.

In Class 2A, Fort Wayne Luers (9-0) opens its title defense against visiting Manchester (5-4) in Sectional 28. In the same regional area, unbeatens Jimtown (9-0) and Central Noble (9-0) are in opposite brackets of Sectional 27 and can’t meet until the championship round.

Among the other defending state champions, five-time Class 5A champ Ben Davis (8-1) entertains Indianapolis Northwest (2-7) in Sectional 6. Five-time Class 3A king Roncalli (6-3) hosts four-time state champion Indianapolis Chatard (4-5) in Sectional 22. Between them, they’ve captured the last three Class 3A state titles and five of the last seven. In Class A, Lafayette Central Catholic (5-4) opens at home against North White (7-2).

Game-by-game season results and overall records for each team are located on the IHSAA website within the Football section. Schools are organized by class and sectional.
