Eight schools eye the top prize

in seventh IHSAA Soccer State Finals

Top-ranked Carmel (girls) and Fort Wayne Canterbury (boys) eye the top prize in Indiana high school soccer Saturday (Oct. 28) at the seventh annual IHSAA Soccer State Finals at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis.

Play begins at 10 a.m. with the girls semifinals games on two fields. The boys semifinals are at noon on two fields. In the evening session, the girls championship is at 6 p.m. and the boys championship at 8 p.m.

New state champions are assured as 1999 winners North Central of Indianapolis (girls) and Penn (boys) were eliminated at the sectional level. None of the teams from the 1999 girls state finals field is back and only Castle from the 1999 boys contingent. But each field includes two former IHSAA state champions.

On the girls side, three-time state champion Carmel (1994, 1995, 1997) and Evansville Memorial (1996) return to the girls field after a one-year hiatus. In the boys competition, three-time state champion North Central (1994, 1995, 1996) is back for the first time in four seasons while Fort Wayne Canterbury (1997, 1998) returns after a one-year absence.

In the most recent coaches association poll, Carmel was the top-ranked girls team and first-round opponent Noblesville was ninth. Evansville Memorial and Chesterton shared the No. 15 ranking. In the boys poll, Fort Wayne Canterbury was No. 1 and semifinals opponent North Central was fourth. Castle was ranked sixth, while Portage was unranked.

FOOTBALL

WEEK TWO FEATURES ANOTHER BATTLE OF UNBEATENS IN CLASS 4A

The 28th annual IHSAA Football Tournament moves into the second week of a six-week run after debuting with a few surprises but few upsets. It did include the first victories of the season for Evansville Harrison (5A) and South Bend Adams (4A). Wheeler, playing its first season of varsity football, made a successful IHSAA tournament debut with a 21-20 triumph in Class 2A at Glenn.

Individually, senior running back Otis Shannon of Indianapolis Cathedral became the state’s career rushing leader with 7,413 yards. Shannon gained 176 yards on 20 carries as the Irish defeated Avon 41-0.

Fifteen 16 of the teams that finished the regular season undefeated are still alive. The exception is in Class 4A, where Jasper ousted host Owen Valley 29-22 in a battle of unbeatens.

At least one more undefeated team will fall by the wayside in Class 4A, as Plainfield (10-0) hosts two-time defending state champion Indianapolis Cathedral (10-0).

Other top second-round games include:
