40 football teams
move to regional round
Led by defending state champions Fort Wayne Luers (Class 2A), Roncalli (Class 3A), and Ben Davis (Class 5A), eight teams in each of the five classes aim for a regional championship this week in the 28th Annual IHSAA Football Tournament.
The 2000 regional field includes three schools -- Attica (Class A), Culver Military (Class 3A) and Plainfield (Class 4A) -- that won their first football sectional championships in school history last week.
Eighteen of the 40 sectional champions were repeat winners. Ben Davis, Jimtown and Penn lead the active sectional championship streak list with six consecutive titles each. Jimtown won its 14th sectional title to match Lawrenceburg for third place on the state’s football sectional title chart. Hobart leads with 19 sectional titles, followed by Carmel with 16. The list of schools with 10 or more sectional titles grew to 18 as East Central, Fort Wayne Snider and North Judson each celebrated its 10th sectional championship last Friday.
Delta, which collected its first sectional title since 1981, ended the longest drought among the 40 champions. Other schools that celebrated after long sectional gaps were Winamac (1985), Center Grove (1987), Elwood (1987), Hammond (1988), Castle (1994), and Warren Central (1994).
Among conferences, there were three leagues with three sectional champions apiece. Those are the: Metropolitan Interscholastic (Ben Davis, Center Grove, Warren Central); Northern Lakes (Goshen, NorthWood, Plymouth); and Southern Indiana (Castle, Evansville Mater Dei, Evansville North).
Five other conferences will be represented by two teams in the regional round. Those are:
The only head-to-head regional championship battle between conference rivals comes in Class 5A where Warren Central seeks its first regional title since 1985 when it hosts Metropolitan Interscholastic foe Ben Davis. That game is one of four rematches from 2000 regular-season play. There also are three rematches of 1999 regional championship games.
In individual matchups, two seniors climbing the Indiana career charts in scoring and rushing will square off in Class A action as Attica travels to Clinton Central.
Attica’s Josh Smith has rushed for 2,372 yards and scored a state-high 383 points this season. Smith ranks No. 2 on the all-time season scoring chart and No. 3 in career scoring with 745 points. He needs 28 points to move past Bo Hundt of Bremen (1992) into second place in career scoring. In career rushing, Smith ranks 14th with 5,423 yards. Clinton Central’s Robbi Petre has rushed for 2,235 yards and scored 208 points this season. He ranks ninth in career rushing with 5,945 yards.
