Media Release of November 14, 2000
2000 season in the RCA Dome
A field comprised of 20 teams chasing the goal of playing for a state title in the 28th Annual IHSAA Football Tournament moves into semi-state play this weekend with six games on Friday (Nov. 17) and four on Saturday (Nov. 18). This week's winners will earn the right to play for state titles Nov. 24-25 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
Included in the field are seven undefeated teams and seven former state champions, topped by defending state champions Fort Wayne Luers (2A), Roncalli (3A) and Ben Davis (Class 5A). Those three are joined by Perry Central (Class A) and Danville (3A) from the 1999 state finals field. Other former state champions still alive are North White, Penn, Plymouth and Zionsville.
Of the other 13 schools still in the hunt, eight – Adams Central, Attica, Center Grove, Delta, East Noble, Heritage Hills, Plainfield and Winamac – are aiming to make their first trip to the state finals.
First-time regional champions crowned last week were Attica, East Noble, Plainfield and Winamac. Noblesville celebrated its first regional title since 1979, while Delta (first since 1982) and Center Grove (first since 1987) ended long droughts.
Ben Davis and Penn extended their regional title streaks to six years, while Adams Central made it four straight. The six-year regional title runs by Ben Davis and Penn are the longest in history. The two had shared the honor with Hobart (1989-93). This was the 25th year for regional competition. The semi-state level of play in the IHSAA football tournament series began in 1981. In the first 19 years of semi-state play, Hobart leads the state with nine titles. The Brickies are followed by Ben Davis, Fort Wayne Luers, Penn and Roncalli with seven titles each.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS HONOR 24 HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLAR ATHLETES
The Indianapolis Colts, in conjunction with the Indiana Football Coaches Association (IFCA) and the IHSAA, have named the second annual Indiana High School Academic All-State Football Team. The awards program identifies the top 24 high school academic football seniors in the state.
The Colts will honor the all-stars Nov. 22 during a 2 p.m. press conference at the Union Federal Football Center at 7001 West 56th St. in Indianapolis.. The players also will be introduced Nov. 26 at the Colts-Dolphins game (1 p.m. EST) at the RCA Dome.
Committee members of the IFCA polled high school football head coaches around the state, and the coaches nominated 166 players who ranked in the top 10 percent of their respective classes. The IFCA selection committee narrowed the list to 24 recipients. The honorees truly represent the spirit of the award, with 18 of the 24 seniors ranking as either a class valedictorian or salutatorian. Overall, 22 of the 24 players have attained grade point averages of 4.0 or higher.
"On behalf of Jim Irsay and the Irsay family, and with deep appreciation for the IHSAA and IFCA, the Colts are pleased to honor 24 outstanding football players who represent their families and schools in an exemplary manner," said Colts President Bill Polian.
"The character it takes to be an excellent achiever in the classroom and on the playing field is something that goes unnoticed too often. This award honors those young men who carry themselves with dignity, integrity and a sense of purpose. They, like many other students, possess the values cherished in young adults. We are pleased to honor these individuals, and it will be an honor to have them on our playing field."
"On behalf of the IFCA, this is a great opportunity to honor another group of outstanding high school student-athletes around the state of Indiana. This is what the IFCA is all about, and we thank the coaches and parents who helped shape the lives of these young men," said Mark A. Miller, football coach and athletic director at Rochester High School. Miller, a past IFCA president, chaired the selection committee.
"Everyone I have talked with about this program is excited about the Indianapolis Colts' participation with high schools. We look forward to this being a long-lasting mutual relationship."
