GIBSON, JOHNSON SET BASKETBALL SCORING PACE

In the first scoring compilations of the 2000-01 basketball season, Karen Gibson of Gary Mann and Phillip Johnson of Tell City lead the state.

Gibson, a 5-9 senior, averaged 34.6 points in her first three games, topped by a 40-point effort against Chicago Collins on Nov. 17. Gibson averaged 15 points and 14 rebounds last season.

Right behind Gibson is Shanna Zolman of Wawasee, averaging 33.2 with a high game of 41 against Elkhart Memorial on Nov. 14. The 5-10 junior led the state in scoring as a freshman with a 31.2 average and as a sophomore with a 33.0. She has made a verbal commitment to attend the University of Tennessee. Zolman started the season with 1,415 career points and now has 1,581. She is 419 points from joining the list of 2,000-point career scorers that now includes 14 girls. The state’s career scoring record is 2,869 by Seeger’s Stephanie White from 1991-1995.

In the boys scoring compilation, 6-5 junior Phillip Johnson of Tell City is the early leader with a 32-point average. In his only game, a 66-62 overtime loss to Forest Park on Dec. 2, Johnson hit 13 of 19 shots to score 32 points. Johnson also is a standout in football as a three-year starter at quarterback for the Marksmen. He threw for 1,988 yards and 14 touchdowns this past season. He stands 23rd on the state’s career passing yardage list with 5,412 yards.

Ty Crone, a 6-1 junior at Eminence, ranks second to Johnson this week with a 31.6 averaging after three games. Next are seniors Teryl Neier of Cascade at 29.5 and Chris Thomas of Pike at 28.5.

The scoring compilation will continue weekly through the state finals. Deadline for reporting is 5 p.m. each Monday. The top 25 scorers appear below. A complete list of all players reported who are averaging 20 points or more is located on the IHSAA website under the following:
