FOOTBALL CLASSIFICATIONS SET FOR 2001, 2002 SEASONS

A total of 36 schools will play in a different classification for the 2001 and 2002 IHSAA football tournaments based on the enrollment ranking of the IHSAA member schools that play football.

The enrollment figures listed were based on the 2000-01 pupil enrollment data submitted by schools earlier this school year to the Indiana Department of Education and the IHSAA. For football classification, only males in grades 9 through 11 are counted in determining a school’s enrollment. Ben Davis, with 1,413 boys in grades 9 through 11, is the state’s largest school. Indiana School for the Deaf, with 53 boys in grades 9 through 11, is the smallest school that plays varsity football.

Of the 387 IHSAA member schools, 309 play football. There are 61 schools assigned to Class 5A, and 62 schools assigned to each of the other four classes. In breaking ties between schools of identical enrollment to determine classification, the school with the larger freshman class of boys was identified as the larger school.

The number of schools changing classes is the fewest in the last five re-classification cycles. A total of 38 schools changed during the last re-classification in 1998. The count included 40 schools in 1996, 48 in 1994 and 40 in 1992.

The school making the biggest jump in the enrollment ranking was Western Boone by moving up 45 spots from No. 232 to No. 187. The Stars remain in Class 2A, where they are the second-largest school.

The school making the largest drop was Hammond by moving down 57 spots from No. 66 to No. 123. The Wildcats did not change classes. They are the smallest school in Class 4A.

Sectional assignments within each football class are scheduled to be announced in mid-January.
