WAWASEE'S SHANNA ZOLMAN CLOSES IN ON

CAREER SCORING RECORD

Senior guard Shanna Zolman of Wawasee continues to lead the state in scoring in girls basketball and is quickly closing in on the state's all-time scoring record.

Following a state season best 53-point performance (35 in the first half) last Friday night at NorthWood, Zollman now stands at 2,776 points and has pulled within 93 of all-time scoring leader Stephanie White with seven games remaining in the Warriors' regular season.

Currently averaging 33.5 points per game for the (Class 4A) sixth-ranked and 15-1 Warriors, Zolman is on pace to set the record on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Whitko. The upcoming schedule for the (Class 4A) sixth-ranked and 15-1 Warriors is as follows: Jan. 8 at Columbia City; Jan. 12 at Elkhart Memorial; Jan. 15 at Whitko and; Jan. 19 vs. Plymouth.

Bound for the University of Tennessee next fall on a basketball scholarship, Zollman led the state in scoring each of her first three years of high school. The state's all-time scoring leaders and season and career statistics for White and Zolman are listed below.

Milestones

Suntana Granderson, a junior guard from at South Bend Riley, scored 42 points collecting the 1,000th point of her career in a Jan. 4 game against South Bend Adams. She joins backcourt classmate Crystal Norman as players to have reached that plateau. Norman broke the same barrier against Merrillville on Dec. 27. Granderson's 42 points against South Bend Adams also set the school record breaking the previous mark of 40 points scored by Norman against LaPorte in 1999-00.

Doug Hicks, the fourth year Caston boys basketball coach, became the winningest coach in school history with his 67th career victory, a 47-40 decision at Winamac on Jan. 4.

Phillip Johnson, a senior forward-guard at Tell City, surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career with a 29-point performance against Washington on Jan. 5. He is the first Tell City boys player to score 1,000 points since Bryan Taylor, a 1975 graduate.

The Kokomo girls varsity basketball team is currently on a 53-game home court winning streak following a 56-23 decision over Carmel on Dec. 22. The string began with a victory over Tri-Central on Feb. 4, 1997. The Lady Kats suffered their first setback of the year, a 61-56 loss at Penn on Jan. 5, which snapped a 37-game regular season winning streak.

Rex Peckinpaugh, in his 20th year as head wrestling coach at New Castle, became the state's all-time winningest coach with 519 victories during the New Castle Invitational on Dec. 15. Peckinpaugh entered the day with 514 victories collecting triumphs over five opponents. He is one of only two coaches in state history -- New Albany's Phil Thrasher with 517 -- to have recorded 500 dual meet victories. During his career, he has coached 62 state finalists, including one state champion, the late James "Bubba" Dickerson, in 1995 at 275 pounds. He also coached 1996 graduate, Mac Taylor, the national record holder for career victories with 221.

Craig Schoen, a senior point guard at South Central (Elizabeth), set the school record for points in a career following a 26-point performance against Frankfort on Jan. 1 in Hinkle Fieldhouse. Schoen, who has signed with Lipscomb University, raised his career total to 1,602 points eclipsing the mark of 1,593 set by his older brother, Scott Schoen, the varsity boys coach at Shoals.

Eric Walsh, a senior guard from Caston, surpassed the 1,000 point mark for his career in the Community State Bank Holiday Tournament at Triton on Dec. 22. Walsh scored his 1,000th point during the second quarter en route to a 29-point night and leading the Comets to the championship over Pioneer. He became just the fifth player in school history to achieve the distinction. Following a 34 point game against Winamac on Jan. 4, Walsh now has 1,050 points.

Anthony Winchester, a senior forward at Austin, scored a season state-best 55 points in the Eagles' victory over Paoli on Dec. 21. He matched that effort in another Austin victory over North Harrison on Jan. 4 scoring 53 in the first three quarters alone. With his 50 points scored in a Nov. 23 game against Scottsburg, Winchester owns three of the four best scoring performances in the state in 2001-02. His 39.3 average ranks second in the state thus far this year.
