STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT BEGINS SATURDAY

The 2002 IHSAA Individual Wrestling Tournament Series begins with sectional competition on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 64 sites and 307 schools in competition. The team champion at each site is determined on the basis of individual match competition. The team champions then advance to the team regional round on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 16 sites. The semi-states are scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 6 at eight sites, with the state finals slated for Saturday, Feb. 23 at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

 

The 64th Annual Individual Tournament, following sectional competition on Jan. 26, will hold its regionals on Saturday, Feb. 2, the semi-states on Saturday, Feb. 9 and the state finals on Friday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 16 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Seeds for the sectional round were determined at the sectional seeding meetings on Monday, Jan. 21, at each sectional host school.

 

Evansville Mater Dei is the defending state champion, having won the last seven state titles in a row and eight overall.

27th IHSAA State Tournament Draw Set For  Jan. 28

Pairings for the 27th annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals will be drawn next Monday (Jan. 28) at the IHSAA office beginning at Noon (EST).  The draw will be posted on the IHSAA website under Girls Basketball/2002 Tournament Pairings at approximately 1:30 (EST).  The draw will also be e-mailed to the IHSAA media release list.

 

Tournament play begins Feb. 5 at 64 Sectional sites, with the Sectional semi-finals on Feb. 8 and the Sectional championship games on Feb. 9.  The Regional round will consist of three games at each of the 32 Regional sites on Feb. 16, with the winner at each of those sites advancing to Semi-State play on Feb. 23 at one of 4 locations.  The Girls State Finals will held at Conseco Fieldhouse on March 2.

 

Members of the media are invited and encouraged to attend the basketball pairings.  Commissioner Blake Ress will conduct the draw and Theresia Wynns, Assistant Commissioner in charge of girls basketball, will be in attendance.  Both will be available for any interviews your organization might desire.  If you have any special needs, please contact Jerry Baker, Sports Information Director, 317-846-6601.

Milestones

 

Lindy Carey of Leo broke her own school record for points scored in a single game Tuesday, Jan. 15, when she poured in 38 in the Lions 80-61 victory over Bluffton in the opening round of the ACAC Girls Basketball Tournament.  Her previous mark was 37.

 

Southwestern (Hanover) girls basketball coach Donna Cheatham is fast approaching the state’s all-time career coaching victories record. With two more victories last week, Cheatham has 446 career wins, just two shy of tying long-time Rushville coach Cinda Brown at 448. The (Class 2A) top-ranked Rebels (14-2) will play at South Ripley tonight (Tues., Jan. 22), host Jac-Cen-Del on Thursday (Jan. 24) and travel to Switzerland County on Monday (Jan. 28).

 

Blue River Valley senior guard Kyle Cox scored 31 points vs. Lapel on Saturday, Jan. 19 to become the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,698 points. The school record holder in every free throw category, Cox is currently shooting .926 (75-81) on the year and .919 (502-546) for his career.

 

South Central (Elizabeth) junior guard Rachel Dixon became the school’s all-time leading scorer on Saturday, Jan. 19 in a 32-point performance against New Washington. Dixon has 1,212 points surpassing the 1,188 set by Becky Bruner (1996-2000).

 

Freshman Morgan Groover set an Elwood single-game scoring record with 40 points in the Panthers’ 74 -68 loss to Mississinewa on Friday, Jan. 18, breaking the mark of 38 points set in 2000 by Heidi Murray.

 

Eminence senior Ashley Houston recorded a triple-double in the Eels victory over Union (Dugger) back on Dec. 8. Houston tallied 28 points, 13 rebounds and 13 steals in the contest.

 

Amanda Kyle of Edgewood set a school mark in the 100 Butterfly on Jan. 15 with a time of 1:05.22, breaking the old record of 1:06.56 she set last year.

 

East Noble’s Kurtis Leer set a conference record in the 100 Backstroke competition in the Northeast Hoosier Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Jan. 12 at the Northwest Allen County Schools Natatorium with a time of 54.16, nearly a full second better than the old conference mark..

 

Though no official records are kept in this category, Madison’s boys basketball team scored 29 points in the fourth quarter – all on free throws -- in a 77-69 victory over Floyd Central on Saturday, Jan. 19.

 

George Richey of Frontier scored a school record 52 points, including 26 in the first quarter, in Frontier’s 118-65 victory over North White in the consolation game of the White County Tournament on Jan. 12.

 

Covington’s Ryan Sowers surpassed the 1,000 point mark for his career on in the Trojans win over Cascade on Jan 12.

 

Lindsey Swanson, a junior guard from Fort Wayne Canterbury, scored her 1,000th career point in the Cavaliers’ 49-40 victory over Central Noble on Jan. 15.

 

Meghan Tyree of Mitchell scored her 1000th point on Jan. 15 at Loogootee. Meghan has been all conference in volleyball, basketball and track every year. Her GPA is over 4.0, ranks No. 1 in her class and was the state’s Class 2A Volleyball Mental Attitude Award winner.

 

 

IHSAA Overtime

 

John Dechant, active in a number of capacities during his 30 years at Goshen H.S., was presented the Northern Lakes Conference Outstanding Service Award prior to the championship round of the Northern Lakes Conference wrestling tournament Jan. 19.  Dechant was Goshen’s head wrestling coach for 19 years with a 204-63-4 dual meet record and 6 NLC, 12 Sectional and 5 Regional titles to his credit.  He produced 41 individual NLC champions, 121 Sectional champions, 40 Regional titleists, 3 Semi-State winners, 17 State finalists and 1 State champion.

 

Andrean head football coach, Jeff Karras, announced his resignation last week.  Karras had compiled a 26–11 record in 3 years at the school and had taken the Fighting 59ers to the 3A State championship game in November.

 

Jerry Brewer, the state’s winningest high school football coach, has announced that his anticipated retirement will be delayed at least one year and that he will return to coach Jasper next season.  Brewer’s record is 357-102-2 in 43 campaigns with the Wildcats and, this past November, picked up the Class 4A championship as his team completed the season 13-1.

 

Shelbyville High School won its first-ever girls Hoosier Heritage Conference basketball championship last Saturday evening with a 66-38 win at home against Delta.

 

Former Boonville High School and University of Louisville football player Jon Hilbert was honored Friday night, Jan. 11 in a picture autograph session in Boonville as part of a fundraiser for the VistaCare Foundation, which provides special needs for terminally ill patients and their families
