64 WRESTLING TEAMS MOVE TO TEAM REGIONAL COMPETITION

A field of 64 teams will compete in team regional competition Wednesday (Jan. 30) at 16 sites across the state. Each site will have four teams, with two rounds of competition. The 16 regional champions will move on to semi-state action Feb. 6 at eight sites.

 

In the sectional round, top-ranked and defending state champion Evansville Mater Dei won its 26th consecutive sectional championship at Evansville Central amassing the largest team total in the state with 304.5 points. Overall, the Wildcats collected their state-best 32nd sectional title.

 

New Castle, which won the Shenandoah Sectional, has the longest active sectional title streak with 27 straight after capturing the Shenandoah Sectional.

 

Evansville Mater Dei will try to extend its state-best run of 23 consecutive regional crowns when it takes on Evansville Memorial in the Evansville Mater Dei Regional.

 

Meanwhile, the 64th  Annual IHSAA Individual Wrestling Tournament Series moves to the regional round Saturday (Feb. 2) at 16 sites. The field includes the champions and runner-up in each weight class from the 64 sectional tournaments last week. The top three regional finishers in each weight class at the 16 regionals will advance to the semi-state competition Feb. 9, hosted by at Evansville Central, Merrillville, New Castle and New Haven.

SHANNA ZOLMAN HEADED TOWARD OVERALL NO. 1

Following a 66 point outburst last week, Wawasee’s Shanna Zolman hit the magic 3,000 number with her girls basketball career points total and moved within 134 points of the state’s all-time leading scorer, Damon Bailey, of Bedford North Lawrence.  Zolman becomes only the 3rd scorer in Indiana history to score 3,000 points.  Along with Bailey, she joins Marion Pierce, a 1961 graduate of Lewisville, who finished with 3,019.  Wawasee plays its final regular season game Friday, Feb. 1, against Northridge, before beginning state tournament play.

 

 

DONNA CHEATHAM NO. 1 ON GIRLS BASKETBALL COACHING LIST

Donna Cheatham of Southwestern (Hanover), became Indiana’s all-time winningest girls high school basketball coach on Jan. 28 with her 449th career win in her team’s 44 - 41 victory over Switzerland County.  Cinda Brown of Rushville held the previous mark of 448 wins.  Cheatham coached for 22 years at Scottsburg, winning a state championship in 1989 and a runner-up trophy in 1986.  A graduate of of Georgetown (Ky) College (BS) and Indiana University (MS), Donna has won 30 Coach of the Year honors.  She has won 14 sectional titles, 9 regionals and 3 semi-states in addition to her state championship.

Girls Swimming and Diving

 

Sectional competition this week at 20 sites

The 27th annual IHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving Tournament series begins Thursday (Feb. 1) with sectional competition at 20 sites. Preliminary action is Thursday, with championship competition on Saturday (Feb. 3).

 

The Carmel Greyhounds were winners of the 2000-01 championship, their 15th in succession and 16th overall.  Coach Ken Stopkotte’s team is ranked No. 1 in the state heading into tournament competition, followed by North Central, Columbus North, Ft. Wayne Snider and Lake Central.

 

The event champions at each of the 20 sectional sites will advance to the state finals Feb. 8-9 at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. In addition, any contestant who equals or betters the state time standard in her respective event in the sectional championship or consolation finals also will qualify.

 

 

Milestones

 

Bellmont’s wrestling team won its 12th consecutive Northeast Hoosier Conference championship on Jan. 19., finished some 30 points ahead of second place Columbia City.

 

Linda Carey of Leo broke her own team scoring record Jan. 15 as she poured in 38 points in the Lions’ triumph over Bluffton in the opening round of the ACAC Tournament.  Carey had set the previous mark of 37 in a matchup with New Haven on Nov. 15.

 

South Bend Riley won its 13th consecutive city swimming meet on Jan. 19.  Louis Cavadini helped set four South Bend City Meet records as the Wildcats captured all 12 meet events.

 

Sr. Kyle Cox of Blue River Valley became the school’s all-time leading scorer on Jan. 19 with a 31-point effort in the Vikings’ 73 – 52 win at Lapel.

 

Rachel Dixon became South Central’s all-time scoring leader on Jan. 19 with a 32 point effort in the Rebels’ win over New Washington.  Dixon surpassed the previous mark of 1,188 points set by Becky Bruner from 1996-2000.

 

East Central High’s Lady Trojans put an end to their 44-game girls basketball losing streak on Jan. 22 as they defeated Lawrenceburg 42 – 40 for their first win in 2 ½ years.

 

The top-ranked Wildcats of Evansville Mater Dei won their eighth consecutive Southern Indiana Athletic Conference wrestling championship on Jan. 19.  Mater Dei was a winner in 12 weight classes and outpointed Evansville Memorial 340.5 to 170.

 

Franklin County Sr.,  Kara Feller, scored her 1,000th career point in the Wildcats win at home against South Dearborn on Jan. 22.

 

The Jasper wrestling team extended its Big Eight Conference record with its fifth consecutive conference title on Jan. 19 with a 222 to 179 margin over second place Princeton.

 

Amanda Kile of Edgewood, who on Tuesday, Jan. 15 broke the school mark in the 100 backstroke, shattered that mark again on Thursday, Jan. 17, lowering the mark to 1:04.55, while setting a school record of :25.85 in the 50 freestyle while swimming the 200 relay.

 

Dusty Linn of North Miami set a school record on Jan. 19 with eight 3-pt field goals in a victory against Oak Hill, breaking the previous mark of seven. 

 

New Prairie High School set a new school record for wins in a season in girls basketball on Jan. 26 with their 17th victory of the year in their 47 – 33 victory over Bremen.

 

In their 94 – 45 win over Anderson Highland on Jan. 26, the Noblesville girls basketball team set a school record with 16 3-pointers.  Cindi Merrill tied her school mark with five 3-point field goals made in a single game.

 

Jr. Abby Noll of Carroll became the school’s all-time leader in girls basketball scoring on Jan. 18 with her 16 point effort versus East Noble in a Chargers’ victory.

 

Peru High School’s wrestlers won their fourth consecutive Mid-Indiana Conference Wrestling Meet Jan. 19 with five winners and three runners-up in the final round.  The Tigers are a perfect four-for-four since joining the MIC.

 

Taylor’s Zach Pritchett, despite suffering a separated shoulder two weeks prior, picked up his 100th career victory in the Mid-Indiana Conference wrestling meet on Jan. 19.  He is now fourth on the school’s all-time victory list.

 

Sr. Evan Seacat became the career scoring leader at Paoli on Jan. 19, breaking the previous school mark of 1,641 points set by Scott Combs from 1990-94.

 

Cass High School diver, Lynnsey Seagraves, set a Mid-Indiana Conference meet record with a score of 484.4 in the conference swim meet on Jan. 19 as the Kings captured the meet title.

 

Stacy Spurgeon of Kankakee Valley set a school career record for assists in the Kougars 68 – 35 win at Rensselaer on Jan. 19 with her 250th.   She surpassed the old mark of 249 held by Kary Myers from 1992-95.

 

Ft. Wayne Canterbury Jr., Lindsey Swanson, scored her 1,000th career point on Jan. 15.  She totaled 29 on the night, including 15 of 17 from the free throw line.

 

Sr. Meghan Tyree of Mitchell became just the third girls basketball player in school history to reach the 1,000 point in the Bluejackets’ game against Loogootee on Jan. 17.  Tyree is Mitchell’s leading scorer and rebounder this season.  She joins Michelle Benson and Kristen Miller in the 1,000+ point category at the school.

 

Taylor’s Stephanie Wideman surpassed the 1,000 career point mark in the Titans’ victory over Clinton Central on Jan. 16. She finished the game with a career total of 1,012 points, while scoring 252 this season.  She moved to sixth on the school’s all-time scoring list, both girls and boys.

 

Ft. Wayne Snider’s wrestling team had a record setting effort in winning the Summit Athletic Conference tournament on Jan. 19, when the Panthers totaled 310 points, breaking the mark they set last year when they ran up a 305 point total.

 

Sr. Adam Thompson set a Huntington North school record with his career high 40 points in the Vikings’ 77 – 72 loss at Broad Ripple Jan. 26.

 

 

 

IHSAA Overtime

 

Ben Davis QB James Banks has been named to the Parade Magazine All –American football team.  Banks was earlier honored as the 2002 Mr. Football for the state and is the only player on the nationally recognized team from Indiana.

 

Chris Immel has been named new head golf coach at Goshen, succeeding Steve Swihart, who leaves with a 118 – 38 record in his 7 years as head coach with the Redskins.

 

Sherman Knight is the new Athletic Director at White’s High School in Wabash.

 

Mike Poynter of Highland has been named Lake Athletic Conference wrestling coach of the year.  His Trojans are coming off a Lake Athletic Conference team tournament win.

 

Elkhart Memorial head wrestling coach, Brian Seltzer, was named Northern Lakes Conference Coach of the Year as the Chargers won their first conference championship in just their second year in the league.

 

Mike Sorrell, winningest coach in Goshen High School basketball history is scheduled to be honored with his picture added to the school’s Wall of Fame at ceremonies on Feb. 1 during the Redskins’ game against Plymouth.  Sorrell had a 189 – 118 record in 14 seasons at Goshen before retiring in 1999.

 

The Southridge Athletic Department and Southridge Letterman’s Club is sponsoring a nostalgia night on Feb. 2 when the Raiders host Princeton in boys basketball.  The event is being held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Huntingburg Memorial Gym.

 

Mike Tricker has been named new Athletic Director at Union City High School.
