64 TEAMS ADVANCE TO GIRLS BASKETBALL REGIONALS

A field of 64 sectional champions returns to action Saturday, Feb. 16, for regional competition at 16 sites in the 27th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament.

At each site, three games will be played, with the first contest scheduled for 10:00 a.m., the 2nd game at Noon and the championship matchup at 8:00 p.m. The four regional champions will move on to semi-state competition Saturday, Feb. 23, at four sites.

Scottsburg and Valparaiso are the all-time leaders in regionals won, with 10.  The Warriorettes picked up their last title in 1995.  The Vikings grabbed their last regional crown in 2000.  Bedford North Lawrence, Ben Davis, Kokomo, and  NorthWood all have nine regional championships.

Only three of the top 10 teams in Class 4A made it through the sectional round, led by top-ranked Bloomington South.  Four of the top 10 in 3A survived, including No. 1 Alexandria.  In 2A, eight of the top 10 managed to make it through the opening salvo, with the leaders of the pack,  Southwestern (Hanover) and Triton Central, still heading toward Conseco Fieldhouse.  In Class A, eight members of the top 10 managed a trip to regional play this Saturday, with North Vermillion showing the way from its perch as the best in that division.

Three of last year’s champions are still alive.  Ben Davis is back to defend its 4A crown.  Indianapolis Cathedral, the winner in 3A in 2001, has moved up to 4A and is still playing.  And the 2A titleholder, Ft. Wayne Bishop Luers, is still searching for another championship, although this time in the 3A field.  The only champ to fall was Triton, as the Trojans lost to North Judson 60-49 in the final game of the LaVille Sectional.

THE ZOLMAN WATCH

Shanna Zolman’s efforts to become the state’s all-time career leading scorer, both boys and girls, came to a halt Friday night as Wawasee lost in the second round of the Warsaw Sectional, 44-42 to Columbia City.  Zolman scored 23 points in the game, ending her career with the Warriors with a total of 3,085, leaving her as the all-time leading scorer among the girls, but some 49 points shy of the boys record of 3,134 held by Damon Bailey of Bedford North Lawrence.  Zolman did move into second place all-time among all scorers as she passed Marion Pierce of Lewisville who finished his career with 3,019 points.

SWEET-16 FOR CARMEL GIRLS SWIMMERS

Rarely has any sport witnessed the domination the Carmel Girls Swimming and Diving Team has displayed over the past 16 years.  Dating back to 1987, the Greyhounds have simply owned the crown in the sport, winning five titles under Ray Lawrence, nine under Tony Young and now a pair under Ken Stopkotte’s guidance.  On Saturday at the I.U. Natatorium in Indianapolis, top-ranked Carmel swam to a 66-point margin over North Central (Indpls), 306-240, giving the Panthers a second-place finish to Carmel for the third straight year.

A trio of records fell during the afternoon and a pair of them belonged to Leah Retrum of Columbus North. She set new state standards in the 200 yard IM by defending her 2001 crown in a time of 2:00.33, breaking the old mark of 2:00.99 set by Michala Kwasny of Ft. Wayne Snider in 1999, and in the 500 yard free, destroying the old mark held by Rebecca Wilson of Homestead in 1999 by over two seconds, 4:46.08  to 4:48.39, for her  second straight title in the event.  The Bull Dogs finished in third place, putting the top three finishing squads in the identical position in which they finished last year.
