CARMEL looks to defend title IN BOYS SWIMMING & DIVING

65th  ANNUAL BOYS SWIMMING & DIVING STATE FINALS

Feb. 22, 6 p.m. (swimming preliminaries)

Feb. 23, 9 a.m. (diving preliminaries) and 1 p.m. (consolations and finals)

Indiana University Natatorium, Indianapolis

Admission: $7 for one session; $10 for all sessions.

Credentials: The 2001-02 IHSAA State Finals Media Pass issued previously will be accepted for admittance.

Late Credentials Requests: FAX requests on company letterhead to Jerry Baker at 317-575-4244.  Approved requests will be held at the Will Call table on the concourse level of the I.U. Natatorium.

The defending state champion and state’s top-ranked team, Carmel, enters the meet with all three of its relay teams, the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle, in the top speed positions.  Individual number-one seeds for the Greyhounds include Grant Wieczorek, sophomore, in the 200 freestyle, Matt Belcher, senior, in the 100 backstroke and Andrew Albright, senior in the 100 breaststroke.

Carmel has won eight IHSAA titles to tie Hammond and South Bend Central for the all-time record.  They rolled to a 415-229 margin over Lawrence North to dominate the Carmel Sectional on Saturday, capturing all three relay events and all but one of the individual events.  Only North Central’s victory in the 500 yard freestyle by  senior Brian Hartley kept the Greyhounds from a clean sweep in the swimming events. David McKown, freshman from Park-Tudor did manage at first place finish in the one-meter diving.

The closest sectional battle of the day occurred at Wawasee, where the host Warriors sneaked past Warsaw, 258-257, by virtue of a win in the 400 yard freestyle relay, the final event of the evening.  Fans at Concord also witnessed a major showdown between Penn and Northridge, with the Kingsmen, also with a victory in the final event, edging the Raiders, 333-331.

The widest margin of victory on Saturday belonged to Munster in their home sectional.  The Mustangs were never challenged as they rolled to a 234 point victory over second place Griffith, 430-196.

Only one individual champion will be coming back in 2002 to defend his titles.  Senior Brian Hartley of North Central (Indpls) was a winner last year in the 200 yard freestyle and the 500 yard freestyle.  Hartley has won the 500 yard freestyle the last two years.

A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR NEARLY EVERYONE AT THE INDIVIDUAL STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The fans came out in huge numbers Friday and Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse to witness the excitement of the Individual Wrestling Championships and the wealth was spread amongst a number of teams.  Only Griffith managed to have more than one representative’s hand held high as a winner.  That included Angel Escobedo in the 112 pound class and Alex Tsirtsis at 130.

Seven wrestlers completed their seasons with undefeated records, led by the pair from Griffith, with Escobedo finishing at 58-0 and Tsirtsis at 59-0.  The winner’s marks in all the classes totaled 639 victories, with only 22 losses.

The top-ranked team in the state, Evansville Mater Dei, had only one winner, but placed four in the championship finals.  That was Blake Maurer in the 145 pound class.

Attendance for the Friday’s first session was 9,136 followed by Saturday’s second session of 9,218 and the championship crowd of 10,953 for a total of 29,307.

Valparaiso’s Jason Cook named Ward E. Brown Mental Attitude Award winner

Jason Cook of Valparaiso, first place finisher in the 135 pound division, was named recipient of the Ward E. Brown Mental Attitude Award.

The award is presented annually to a senior in the state finals who best demonstrates excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. The award is named in honor of Mr. Brown, the IHSAA’s fourth commissioner from 1976-83.

Cook became the second wrestler from Valparaiso to capture the award, along with Mark Harbold in 1978.

Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Valparaiso High School in the name of Cook.

MILESTONES

Plymouth boys basketball coach, Jack Edison, reached the 450-win mark on Feb. 13 with his team’s 65-52 victory over South Bend St. Joseph’s.  Edison is now 450-217 in some 29 years of coaching.  He won a state championship in 1982 with the Pilgrims.

Austin’s Anthony Winchester moved to #27 on the boys Indiana high school career scoring list on Feb. 14 with a 23 point effort at Crothersville, moving his career total to 2,052.  Kojak Fuller, a 1993 grad of Andeerson, is next on the list at 2,060. The Mitchell girls basketball team, under head coach Ross Simpson, set a school record for victories in a single season as they finished 20-4, winning their third straight Patoka Lake Athletic Conference title and their first ever sectional.

Bloomington North’s Sean May became Monroe County’s career scoring leader on Feb. 16 with a career mark of 1,550 points, surpassing Jon Holmes, the previous record holder who had 1,536 during his career at Bloomington South.

Seth Colclasure of Bellmont, who is on pace to break the national high school record for career free throw percentage, has become the first player from Adams County to break the 2000-point barrier for his career.
