Admission: $7 for one session; $10 for all sessions.

The defending state champion and state’s top-ranked team, Carmel, enters the meet with all three of its relay teams, the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle, in the top speed positions.  Individual number-one seeds for the Greyhounds include Grant Wieczorek, sophomore, in the 200 freestyle, Matt Belcher, senior, in the 100 backstroke and Andrew Albright, senior in the 100 breaststroke.

Carmel has won eight IHSAA titles to tie Hammond and South Bend Central for the all-time record.  They rolled to a 415-229 margin over Lawrence North to dominate the Carmel Sectional on Saturday, capturing all three relay events and all but one of the individual events.  Only North Central’s victory in the 500 yard freestyle by  senior Brian Hartley kept the Greyhounds from a clean sweep in the swimming events. David McKown, freshman from Park-Tudor did manage at first place finish in the one-meter diving.

The closest sectional battle of the day occurred at Wawasee, where the host Warriors sneaked past Warsaw, 258-257, by virtue of a win in the 400 yard freestyle relay, the final event of the evening.  Fans at Concord also witnessed a major showdown between Penn and Northridge, with the Kingsmen, also with a victory in the final event, edging the Raiders, 333-331.

The widest margin of victory on Saturday belonged to Munster in their home sectional.  The Mustangs were never challenged as they rolled to a 234 point victory over second place Griffith, 430-196.

Only one individual champion will be coming back in 2002 to defend his titles.  Senior Brian Hartley of North Central (Indpls) was a winner last year in the 200 yard freestyle and the 500 yard freestyle.  Hartley has won the 500 yard freestyle the last two years.

Center Grove High School, Greenwood    Saturday, Feb. 23      10:00 a.m.       Tickets  $7.00

The 2002 IHSAA Team Wrestling Tournament has pared a field of 307 teams down to the final-eight. The tournament will culminate Feb. 23 at Center Grove High School in Greenwood where those state finalists will compete in three rounds to determine the state champion.

Evansville Mater Dei, #1 in the state in the final Indiana High School Coaches Association poll, is the defending champion, having won seven consecutive IHSAA Team Wrestling state championships. The Wildcats also were the state champions in 1985-86.  All eight titles have come under head coach, Mike Goebel.  Last year, Mater Dei defeated Portage 40-16 to capture the team crown.

In the semi-state, Bellmont ran up the highest point total in defeating Columbia City 51-17, as the Braves won their fifth straight semi-state and twelfth overall.  Franklin advanced to the state finals for the seventh consecutive year.  The Grizzly Cubs are in search of their first state championship.  Perry Meridian advances to the finals for the second time, having made the trip in 2000.  Mishawaka heads to Indianapolis for the fifth time.  For Portage, it’s trip number eight. It’s the first time around in the finals for Harrison (West Lafayette).  And New Castle comes to the big show for the sixth time.
