SIX FIRST-TIMERS MAKE TRIP TO 2002 GIRLS STATE BASKETBALL FINALS

Of the eight teams that will make their way to Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday, only two have felt the pressure and experienced the excitement of playing for an IHSAA girls state basketball championship in the history of their school.

In 3A, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers is back for the fourth consecutive year and looking for their fourth straight championship, though this time they will make the trip under new head coach, Teri Rosinski, after Gary Andrews took the Knights all the way the previous three trips and they will move up to the 3A classification after having won their previous titles in 2A. Though pre-season rated #4, the Knights stumbled in their second game of the season and four more times along the way to fall out of the top-ten at season’s end.

The other “experienced” visitor to the state finals is Shenandoah.  The Raiders know the way to Conseco Fieldhouse by virtue of their trip to that locale one year ago.  That trip ended in disappointment for them as they lost to Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, 39-55, in the title game.  Six of those player return to Indianapolis this week, but between them, they only accounted for a total of 12 points in that meeting.

BRIAN HARTLEY NAMED KELLER MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD RECIPIENT

Brian Hartley of North Central (Indpls.) was selected winner of the prestigious Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

Brian was a two-time champion at the state meet, with victories in the 200 yard freestyle and a record setting effort in the 500 yard freestyle. A co-captain of this year's team, he has been a winner of a number of awards, including being an eight time individual Marion County champion and a former USA Swimming Indiana 13-14 Boys Overall High Point Champion. He was named the school's Most Outstanding Athlete in 2000 and 2001, and the Northern Lights Rookie of the Year in 2001.

He is co-editor in chief of the North Central High School newspaper, Northern Lights, and enjoys playing the piano and flag football with his friends.  He will attend the University of Florida to major in Broadcast Journalism.  Upon graduation from North Central, he will be awarded the North Central Honors Diploma, symbolic of the many honors classes he has taken while attending the school.

The Award honors the former IHSAA assistant commissioner, Herman F. Keller, who served the association from 1961-1973. The recipient of the award, who was nominated by his principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in swimming and diving. Doug Wigand, a representative of Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to North Central High School in Indianapolis in the name of Hartley, whose parents, Jan and Bob Hartley, were on hand to witness the occasion.

EIGHTH STRAIGHT TEAM WRESTLING TITLE FOR EVANSVILLE MATER DEI

Evansville Mater Dei’s stranglehold on the wrestling state title continued as the Wildcats downed Perry Meridian, 49-12, in the championship match of the Seventh Annual IHSAA Team Wrestling State Finals at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.

Mater Dei’s remarkable run of wrestling state titles reached eight (nine overall including 1986) as the Wildcats won 11 of the 14 matches in the championship round. Mater Dei won its first crown of the current streak in 1995 when the title was decided on points at the individual state finals. Mike Goebel, who led the team to a 21-0 finish this season, has been the Mater Dei coach all along.
