2001-02 TOURNAMENTS BEGIN WITH GIRLS GOLF SECTIONALS

The first of 20 IHSAA tournaments in the 2001-02 school year begins this week with sectional competition in the 29th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf Tournament at 21 sites across the state. Every sectional site is scheduled to play an 18-hole round on Saturday (Sept. 15). In each sectional, the low three teams and the low three individuals from a team that doesn’t advance will qualify for regional competition at seven sites on Sept. 22. The state finals are set for Sept. 28-29 at the Legends of Indiana in Franklin with 18 holes each day.

The low nine teams and any other team within 20 strokes of the lead after the first round on Sept. 28 will return for the second round on Sept. 29. Individually, the low nine players -- excluding any that advance with their team -- and any other players within six strokes of the individual lead after the first round will advance to the second round on Sept. 29.

Martinsville enters as the six-time defending state champion. The Artesians were ranked second behind Western in this week’s girls golf poll conducted by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. Noblesville was third, followed by Center Grove and Zionsville.

IHSAA News

Dan Egierski of Evansville named IHSAA

distinguished media service award recipient

Dan Egierski, a native of South Bend who has become a fixture on the sporting scene of southwestern Indiana, has been named the 2001-02 recipient of the IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award in District III. He will be honored during pre-game ceremonies Friday (Sept. 14) when Castle plays host to Evansville North in Paradise.

A professional broadcaster since 1978, Egierski serves as sports director of WGBF in Evansville where he has been a staff member since 1986. He also has been a prolific play-by-play announcer for high school football, basketball and baseball in southwestern Indiana, along with college basketball, college baseball and pro baseball.

Egierski, 45, is a graduate of South Bend LaSalle High School (1974), where he was a four-year participant in football and baseball, and the University of Evansville (1978) with a degree in interpersonal communications. He began his career in 1978 with WGBF in Evansville before spending seven years with WTCJ in Tell City. During his career, he has averaged 20 high school football broadcasts and nearly 50 high school and college basketball broadcasts each year.

He has been honored previously as the Indiana broadcaster of the year, and was presented the key to the city of Evansville by Mayor Frank McDonald in 1999.

"I have always tried to be the best broadcaster I can be, keeping in mind how many hours and how hard the athletes have worked getting ready for each game," Egierski said of his approach to providing coverage of sports, particularly on the high school level. "I feel they deserve nothing less than a broadcaster who is well prepared for each game."

He lists his fondest broadcasting memories as providing the call on nine IHSAA state championship events involving southwestern Indiana teams, and the 1999 Castle-Evansville Memorial football game in which his son played his final regular-season high school football game. Egierski’s father, Jerry, traveled from South Bend to provide color commentary on the broadcast.

Egierski and his wife, Cindy, live in Newburgh. Their son, Ryan, is an engineering student at Purdue who graduated from Castle High School and was a four-year participant in football and baseball. Their daughter, Lauren, is a junior at Castle High School where she was a member of the 2001 IHSAA Class 3A softball state championship team and also participates in volleyball.

This is the 18th year the IHSAA has recognized an outstanding member of the Indiana media across the state in each of the IHSAA legislative districts. In previous years, there were five IHSAA legislative districts. With a change in the IHSAA governance structure that went to effect this year reducing the number of districts from five to three, Egierski will be one of three honorees in 2001-02. The other recipients will be announced at a later date.

Previous award recipients from southwestern Indiana were:
