Martinsville seeks 7th straight

girls golf championship

Six-time defending state champion Martinsville will be joined by 20 other schools in the 29th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals Friday and Saturday (Sept. 28-29) at the Legends of Indiana in Franklin.

The Artesians, ranked third in the final 2001 coaches association poll, earned their 12th consecutive trip to the state finals with a solid 32-stroke victory over Bloomington North in the Martinsville Regional played at Foxcliff Golf Club in Martinsville.

After a state runner-up finish in 1990, Martinsville won state titles in 1991, 1992 and 1993. The Artesians were the state runner-up in 1994, and have placed first in every state finals since. In 2000, they rallied from a six-stroke deficit after one round to win by 16 strokes over Noblesville.

Among the teams challenging Martinsville in the 2001 state finals will be top-ranked Western, which won the Marion Regional by 38 strokes over Yorktown with a 315 team total at Meshingomesia Country Club in Marion.

Noblesville, ranked fifth in the coaches poll, posted the state’s top regional score with a 311 at the New Castle Regional played on the Westview Country Club course in New Castle. Fourth-ranked Zionsville was second at 324. Junior Amber Prange led Noblesville with a state-best 68 for medalist honors.

Other regional team championships were captured by Evansville Memorial at Bedford North Lawrence, Homestead at East Noble, Lafayette Jefferson at Lafayette, and Penn at LaPorte.

Individually, a new state champion is assured. Lauren Gant of Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger graduated last spring after winning the 2000 IHSAA individual title by three strokes over sophomore Caroline Haase of Culver Academy.

Haase returns as one of seven players in the field who finished in the top 10 in 2000. Other returning players from the top 10 in 2000 are Sally Shonk of Noblesville, Rachel Meikle of Carroll (Fort Wayne), Ellyn Leonard of Zionsville, Ashlie Rose and Stephanie Turner of Martinsville, and Katie Tewell of Center Grove.

Haase fired a 72 to take medalist honors at the LaPorte Regional played at Beechwood Golf Course. Meikle was the medalist at East Noble, and Turner at Martinsville.

In addition to their IHSAA tournament achievements, Haase and Leonard met in the finals of the 51st Girls State Junior Golf Championship in July at Zollner Golf Course in Angola. Leonard prevailed, 3 and 1.

The Legends of Indiana is the site of the IHSAA state finals for the second time. It became home of the IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals last fall, and also hosted the 2001 IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals championships in June. Designed by Jim Fazio and opened in 1992, the Legends of Indiana has hosted three United States Golf Association qualifiers and several of Indiana’s major golf championships. That includes both the men’s and women’s state amateur tournaments and the Indiana PGA. Under the direction of head professional Ted Bishop, the course has previously hosted IHSAA sectional and regional championships for girls and boys.
