A new champion will reign

in IHSAA boys team tennis

Four outstanding teams that have combined for an aggregate record of 76-1 this season will converge at North Central High School in Indianapolis Saturday (Oct. 13) to decide the 35th IHSAA Boys Team Tennis championship. Each of the four seeks its first state title in boys tennis.

Top-ranked Center Grove leads the pack at 22-0 with all three of its singles players sporting undefeated records. Battling the Trojans in the semifinals will be Munster (18-0) The other semifinal matches Terre Haute North (17-0) against West Lafayette (19-1).

Munster is the only returning team from the 2000 IHSAA State Finals. It’s the ninth appearance for the Mustangs and their fourth in a row. Terre Haute North and West Lafayette are making their first state finals trip. Center Grove is here for the second time in three years and sixth overall.

Center Grove’s singles trio of senior John Stone (25-0) at No. 1, junior Joe Epkey (26-0) at No. 2 and junior Evan West (23-0) at No. 3 have combined for a 74-0 record. Stone and Epkey combined to win the IHSAA doubles championship in 1999. The only other undefeated player in the field is West Lafayette sophomore Steve Lasloffy (9-0) at No. 2 singles.

In the most recent coaches association poll, Terre Haute North was ranked No. 5, while West Lafayette shared the No. 6 spot and Munster was No. 11.

Also on tap for Saturday are the regional rounds of the IHSAA singles and doubles competitions. Those winners will advance to the state finals next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 19-20) at Five Seasons Sports Country Club in Indianapolis.
