15 football teams roll into 29th IHSAA
state tournament with unblemished records
Defending state champions Evansville Mater Dei (Class 2A) and Heritage Hills (Class 3A) headline a list of 15 teams that enter the 2001 IHSAA Football Tournament this week with perfect regular-season records.
There are two unbeaten teams in Class 5A, one in Class 4A, three in Class 3A, seven in Class 2A and two in Class A. There were 16 unbeaten teams during the 2000 regular season. Other recent seasons saw 16 unbeatens in 1999, 17 in 1998 and 1997, 20 in 1996 and 19 in 1995.
Five teams – including four in Class 2A – repeated perfect regular-season campaigns. Evansville Mater Dei was joined in that performance by Fort Wayne Luers, the team it topped 56-10 for the 2000 Class 2A state crown. Brownstown Central (2A) posted its third straight 9-0 regular season, while Jimtown (2A) made it two straight. Heritage Hills extended its regular-season string to a state-best 32 games. The Patriots haven’t dropped a regular-season game since Sept. 11, 1998 in an overtime setback to Southridge. During that streak the Patriots have posted 16 shutouts, including four this season.
There are no first-round battles of unbeatens, but one looms in the second round between Brownstown Central and Indian Creek in Class 2A Sectional 31.
Among the defending state champions, five-time state champion Penn (8-1) begins defense of its title at Michigan City in Class 5A Sectional 2. In Class 4A, East Noble (1-8) opens at home against Concord. In Class 3A, Heritage Hills (9-0) plays host to Washington. In Class 2A, Evansville Mater Dei (9-0) visits Tell City. In Class A, Adams Central (3-6) travels to Northfield.
Game-by-game season results for each team are located on the IHSAA website within the Football section. Schools are organized by class.
