40 FOOTBALL TEAMS MOVE TO REGIONAL ROUND
Defending state champions Evansville Mater Dei (Class 2A), Heritage Hills (Class 3A) and Penn (Class 5A) lead a contingent of eight teams in each of the five classes who will aim for a regional championship this week in the 29th Annual IHSAA Football Tournament. Eighteen regional championship games will be played Friday (Nov. 9) and two on Saturday (Nov. 10).
The 2001 regional field includes a first-time sectional champion in Southern Wells (Class A) and six schools who celebrated their first sectional championships in at least 10 years. That group is led by Glenn (2A) who won its second sectional championship and first since 1981. The other schools who broke sectional title droughts of at least a decade were Batesville (1986), Shenandoah (1986), South Decatur (1990), New Haven (1991) and South Putnam (1991).
Sixteen of the 40 sectional champions were repeat winners. Ben Davis, Jimtown and Penn lead the active sectional championship streak list with seven consecutive titles each. Ben Davis and Penn each are aiming to extend the state record they share for consecutive regional titles at six.
Jimtown won its 15th sectional title to move alone into third place on the state’s football sectional title chart. Hobart leads with 19 sectional titles, followed by Carmel with 17.
Of the 20 regional games, only two involve rematches from the regular season. Defending Class 5A champion hosts Valparaiso after defeating the Vikings 35-28 in the season opener. Also in 5A, Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference rivals Ben Davis and Warren Central meet again at Ben Davis. The Giants won the regular season encounter 38-28 on Aug. 31.
Penn-Valparaiso and Ben Davis-Warren Central are two of the four games that involve rematches from the 2000 regional round. The others match Class 2A unbeatens as defending state champion Evansville Mater Dei visits Brownstown Central and Fort Wayne Luers travels to Jimtown. It the sixth straight year that Fort Wayne Luers and Jimtown have met on the tournament trail and the third consecutive season they’ve met with a regional title at stake. Hobart leads the state in overall regional titles with 15.
