2001 football season
concludes on a high note
A season of individual and team achievement concluded last weekend at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis with five state champions crowned before a two-day crowd of 41,560.
Nineteen state championship game records were broken and 15 more were tied. The championship weekend completed a six-week tournament that began with 309 teams at the sectional level. More than 16,000 athletes participated in the tournament series.
Southern Wells (Class A) celebrated its first IHSAA state title in any sport and Jasper (4A) its first in football.
Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (Class 2A) collected its second football title in three years and the fifth overall. Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (Class 3A) earned its third crown in five years and fifth overall. Ben Davis won its second title in three years and its sixth overall to tie Sheridan for the state lead. Dick Dullaghan, coach of the Giants, celebrated his seventh state title while making his 10th championship game appearance. Dullaghan is 6-2 with Ben Davis in championship games and was 1-1 during a seven-year stint at Carmel in the 1970s.
By finishing as undefeated state champions, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers and Ben Davis joined a list of unbeaten champions that now numbers 61. The list includes 12 teams in Class A, 14 in Class 2A, 17 in Class 3A, eight in Class 4A and 10 in Class 5A.
First-time appearances by Delta and Southern Wells brought the list of schools who have played in the IHSAA Football State Finals to 108. Of that group, all but Indianapolis Washington are current IHSAA member schools. Of the 309 IHSAA member schools that play football, 34 percent have reached the state finals at least one time in the tournament's 29 years. Fifty-one schools have reached the state finals more than once, led by Hobart with 11 appearances. A total of 65 schools have won an IHSAA football state championship. All told, 123 champions have been crowned
