Zolman, Winchester pace
first basketball scoring compilations
It’s a new season of high school basketball, but a familiar name sits atop the IHSAA girls basketball state scoring list. Wawasee’s Shanna Zolman enjoys a three-point edge over her nearest rival in the first compilation of the 2001-02 season. On the boys list, the first-week leader is Anthony Winchester of Austin.
Zolman is the first player – girl or boy – to lead the state in scoring three times. The senior guard who has signed a letter of intent with the University of Tennessee is off to a fast start in search of a fourth scoring crown. Through seven games, Zolman is averaging 33.4 points with a high of 36 against Bremen and East Noble. Wawasee stands 7-0, with Zolman hitting 79 of 149 (.530) of her field shots and 43 of 46 (.934) free throws. She’s also contributing 9.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists a game.
With 234 points this season, Zolman has moved from fifth place to third place on the Indiana career scoring list with 2,473 points. Still ahead of her are Abby Conklin (Charlestown, 1993) with 2,616 points and Stephanie White (Seeger, 1995) with 2,869.
Alexandria freshman Jodi Howell, averaging 30.6 points with a high of 41, ranks second to Zolman in the early going of this season’s scoring race.
The gap between first and second place on the boys side is even wider, with senior guard Anthony Winchester owning a four-point difference over Elwood senior Tom Kessinger with a 35.7 average after four games.
Winchester, who has signed a letter of intent with Western Kentucky, opened the season with a 40-point outburst against Graceland Christian and followed with a 50-point explosion against Scottsburg for the 3-1 Eagles. Winchester averaged 25.1 points last season and finished in a three-way tie for third place on the 2000-01 season scoring chart.
The scoring compilations will continue weekly through the state finals in each gender. Deadline for reporting is 5 p.m. each Monday
