CENTER GROVE'S CAROL TUMEY RECEIVES NFHS CITATION

Assistant Athletic Director Carol Tumey of Center Grove High School in Greenwood was one of eight outstanding high school athletic directors from around the country to be chosen for a 2001 Citation by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) recently.

Tumey, along with the other recipients, were to receive their awards on December 15 in Orlando, Florida at the 32nd Annual National Conference of High School Directors of Athletics.

NFHS Citations are presented annually to outstanding athletic directors in recognition of contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local, state and national levels.

Serving as Assistant Athletic Director at Center Grove for the past 26 years and an employee of the school since 1963, Tumey helped develop the Trojans' girls athletic program into one of the state's best. She has coached volleyball, basketball, cross country and track and field. During an outstanding tenure as track coach, Tumey received the National High School Coaches Association Girls Track Coach of the Year award in 1980, and she received the National High School Coaching Gold Award in 1987.

Nationally, Tumey has been a member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) since its inception in 1977. In 1991, she received the NIAAA State Award of Merit and she currently serves on the NIAAA Hall of Fame Ad Hoc Committee and as vice-chair of the NIAAA Awards Committee.

At the state level, Tumey was the first woman elected to the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (IIAAA) Board of Directors. Since 1983, she has served as the IIAAA awards chairperson in which she is responsible for the awards presentations at the annual state conference.
