TITLES IN SIX SPORTS UP FOR GRABS DURING WINTER SEASON

With the holiday season behind us, it’s back to work for coaches, teams and individuals across the state as championships in six IHSAA sports will be determined over the next three months of the winter season.

First up will be the girls swimming and diving titles, slated for the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI in Indianapolis February 13-14.  That will be followed by chases for championships in individual and team wrestling, boys swimming, girls basketball, gymnastics and boys basketball.

The team wrestling tournament draw is scheduled for January 22, with the girls basketball draw on February 1 and the boys basketball draw on February 23.

For the complete calendar line-up, go to: 2003-04 IHSAA Sports Seasons At A Glance.

BLUFFTON MOVES UP IN ONLY LEADERSHIP CHANGE IN

LATEST A.P. BOYS BASKETBALL POLLS

A 52-41 loss at Southridge on January 2 forced Forest Park (7-1) out of the No. 1 position in the A.P. Class 2A High School Basketball Poll this week.  That was the only change among the leaders in the four classes and it allowed Bluffton (7-0) to move up a notch into that top spot.

New names in this week’s polls included Seeger (2A), North Montgomery (2A) and Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian (A).  Jimtown (2A), Harding (2A) and Pioneer (A) were all shoved out of the top-10.

ONE NEW FRONTRUNNER IN ICGSA GIRLS BASKETBALL RANKINGS

With the lone exception in Class 3A, there were no changes in the leadership spots in this week’s Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association’s weekly basketball polls.

In 4A, top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern remained undefeated in 13 games.  In Class 3A, Brebeuf Jesuit re-gained the No. 1 position, sporting a 12-2 mark after winning its own holiday tourney.  North Knox is again out front in Class 2A with an unblemished record in 13 contests.  In Class A, Indianapolis Lutheran, at 10-1, shows the way.

Dropping out of the top-10:  Rushville (3A)

GREYHOUNDS STILL SWIMMING & DIVING LEADERS

The holidays did nothing to detract from the strength of the Carmel Greyhounds swim teams as they maintained their locks on the top spots in this week’s Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association boys and girls swimming polls.

There were no new arrivals in the boys rankings this week and only one new addition to the girls’ top-20 (Terre Haute North #19-t), with Bloomington North dropping out.
